Rules Passed:
Definition: Avoid designing parts with very small holes. Small diameter punches are susceptible to failure.
Definition: If a countersink hole is too close to an edge, the edge will distort, forming a bulge. The minimum distance a hole should have from an edge is a function of the
sheet thickness.
Definition: If two countersink holes are too close to each other, there is a possibility of distortion. The minimum distance between two countersink holes is a function of
the sheet thickness.
Definition: If a counterbore hole is too close to an edge, the edge will distort, forming a bulge. The minimum distance a counterbore hole should have from an edge is a
function of the sheet thickness.
Definition: If a hole is too close to a bend, the hole will distort during bending assuming that the hole is punched before bending. Punching the hole after bending, will be
more expensive due to additional cost of fixtures.
Definition: For the ease of manufacturing, multiple bends on the same plane should occur in the same direction.
Definition: For manufacturing at optimal quality, maximum speed and lowest cost, open hems should have a sufficiently large radius and height.
Definition: If a countersink hole is too close to a bend, the hole will distort during bending assuming that the countersink hole is manufactured before bending.
Definition: For the ease of manufacturing, there should be sufficient distance between a rolled hem and the edge of the hole.
Definition: The ratio of the external radius of a rolled hem to sheet thickness should be greater than or equal to the specified value, which is configurable and The ratio of
the rolled hem opening to sheet thickness should be greater than or equal to the specified value, which is configurable.
Parameter: Hem Radius to Sheet Thickness Ratio (R/t), Hem Opening to Sheet Thickness Ratio (D/t)
Hem Radius to Sheet Thickness Ratio (R/t)
Recommendations
Definition: A general guideline is to keep the inside radius approximately equal to the material thickness. However depending on the material being used, this value may
have to be increased, otherwise it will cause material flow problems in soft material and fracturing in hard material.
Definition: The distance from cutout to bend should not fall below a minimum value to allow for economical tooling.
Definition: For ease of fabrication and setup, sheet metal features should lies on one side of the plane.
