Overview
Chevron’s new signage system is an important extension of our brand

identity. It utilizes elegant and high quality materials to convey our
brand’s revitalized and modern design.
It is just as important to follow the standards developed for our

signage as it is for any other application. Our signage system needs to
convey a unified look and feel — from a corporate campus to a highrise
office location. It is this visual consistency that builds and strengthens
Chevron’s brand.
The following standards are intended to help you fabricate, install and
offer a broad range of sign types appropriate for many different types
of locations.

Approach 1: Hallmark Only Signage applications may be designed with one of three brand
approaches: the Hallmark only; the Hallmark with the Chevron
Energy Solutions (CES) Wordmark; and the Hallmark with Our Family
of Brands (FOB) Lock-up.

The CES Wordmark is appropriate for exterior applications when
Chevron Energy Solutions occupies an entire facility. The CES
Wordmark is appropriate on an interior sign to specifically identify

Primary Identification Signs

Sign Types
Planning signs for a Chevron location requires an understanding

of each sign element. In this document the sign types have been
divided into two families, primary signs and secondary signs, so that
you may better understand the use of each sign type through their
commonalities and differences.
Primary signs are the most prominent and visible of the sign family.
The main purpose of a primary sign is to clearly identify Chevron
locations.
Secondary signs support the primary signs by orienting, directing,

A high visibility branding opportunity and signing a Chevron site

involves some decision making. Signing opportunities vary from one
location to another. For example, urban locations offer fewer signing
opportunities than the many found on corporate campuses. These
standards provide a detailed description of primary and secondary
signs so that signing decision making may be simplified.
Safety and security should be a high priority consideration when

installing high visibility signs. Please consult with Chevron Corporate
Security for guidance. This illustration is provided as an overview of
the typical sign applications a Chevron site may require.

Primary Identification Signs
This section focuses on the principles behind the Chevron global

signage system for primary signage.
To be effective, primary signs must clearly identify Chevron

locations. Our primary sign family ranges from exterior pylon and
monument signs to interior lobby signage. Ideally, all of the primary
sign types including the flag, pylon or monument, an exterior metal
Hallmark sign and an interior metal Hallmark sign should be used at
a Chevron building. In most cases, a single primary sign type will not
sufficiently identify a Chevron office.
This section of the standards addresses the use of each primary sign
type and its specifications.

Pylon and Monument Signs

Hallmark signs follow the same brand identity principles as the pylon
and monument signs. Hallmark signs display the Chevron identity of
the business within the building.
These options for Hallmark signs have been designed to

accommodate a range of site conditions and preferences:
Interior and Exterior

• Metal Hallmark sign for exterior building entrances, interior lobby
and reception areas.
• Large and medium panel Hallmark sign for exterior building
entrances or interior lobby and reception areas.
• Large and medium panel Hallmark sign for industrial sites.
Interior Only
• Small panel Hallmark sign for elevator lobby and reception areas
Metal Hallmark Sign - Interior Lobby (color and metal Hallmark options).
At a Chevron building, the metal Hallmark is the preferred Hallmark

sign for exterior and interior applications. When applied to the
exterior it is best positioned on the building fascia over the main
entrance or on a prominent architectural element, such as a column.
A smaller metal Hallmark sign can be used in interior applications like
building lobbies and reception areas. This sign should be positioned in
a prominent position near the reception desk.
Use the large panel Hallmark sign when a suitable location for the
pylon or monument sign is not available. It should be located on an
exterior wall adjacent to the main or side entrance. The sign should

be positioned so the Chevron Hallmark is approximately 4'-6" from
the ground up. The secondary text lines are for the building address
exclusively. Do not use these lines to identify the downstream

When many different companies occupy multiple floors in the same

facility, a metal or small panel Hallmark sign in the elevator lobby or in
the reception area should be displayed.
Color and metal versions of the small Hallmark sign have been
designed to complement different interior environments.
When choosing a sign consider the scale of its environment. The

Secondary Directional Signs
Secondary signs complement the primary sign family through the use
of similar forms and materials to reinforce the Chevron brand identity.
The purpose of secondary signs is to direct visitors, delivery

personnel and employees to their destinations. Use the secondary
signs to present the following types of information:
Orientation
Information that gives users an overview of where they are relative
to the building and environment. For example, a panel directory sign
provides destination information to business units or departments
within the building.
Directional
Information provided along the intended route that confirms the
correct direction to the desired destination. Signs include descriptive
language, directional arrows, building features and landmarks.
Identification
Information provided at the destination that confirms the arrival at
the intended destination. Signs include names located at destination
entrances for offices, meeting and conference rooms, stairs, wings,
etc. Signs may also identify the presence of organizations within an
office context.
Types of Signs
The secondary sign system includes freestanding, wall-mounted and
hanging identification and directional signs. Any one or combination
of these sign types may be used. Large corporate sites may require
many secondary signs to effectively aid employee and visitor
wayfinding to both the building’s interior and exterior.

General Information
Wayfinding
Wayfinding is how people apply their perceptual and cognitive abilities
and habits to orienting themselves within new and familiar settings.
An effective wayfinding system responds organically to people’s
intuitive capabilities; it should be experienced as an integral part of the
environment. A good wayfinding system integrates signs, landscaping,
lighting, and the natural environment to direct visitors and employees
to their destinations. The family of signs accross all our properties
has been designed to reinforce the new Chevron identity, enhance the
architectural environment, and provide the flexibility necessary to
address multiple sites and zoning requirements.
Sign Location
Visitors as well as employees of Chevron are asked to make many
decisions en route to their destinations. The fewer the choices, the
more efficient the route. Exterior and interior intersections are vital
decision points in which the user requires assistance in the form of
signs. Irrespective of configuration, most intersections require four
signs to ensure the information is visible to visitors coming from all
directions. However, it is not necessary to provide direction for every
destination at every intersection. This would be overwhelming and
create more confusion than clarity. Our goal is to direct the user to

assist in the decision making process.

Use the door decal at the main entrances to Chevron buildings. The
decal should be positioned at 5', measured from the floor to the top
of the Chevron Hallmark. When extended beyond the glass doors,
decals enhance safety in areas with glass. Unnecessary use of decals
on windows or walls would be considered decorative and should be
absolutely avoided.

The wall-mounted panel sign may be used for exterior and interior
applications. In most cases, the small size sign will be more
appropriate for interior applications. The large size signs are best
suited for exterior applications.
Consistently position interior signs. The small version of the wall-

mounted panel sign should be positioned at 5', measured from the
floor to the center of the sign. This position is ideal for a range of user
types, including those with poor vision and those in a wheelchair.

For exterior applications, position the sign just above eye
level as necessary. In addition to carrying directional information, the
wall-mounted panel sign may be used to identify individual business
units and departments within a Chevron facility.
Use the small wall-mounted panel sign adjacent to the entrance of

an office suite. The extended panel is well positioned behind the

The hanging panel sign may be used for interior and exterior
applications. Only use this sign when ample overhead space is

Changeable Panel Directory Sign
Often, businesses or departments occupy or share space in an

office building. Used in a building lobby, the directory sign provides
visitors and employees a list of the buildings‘ occupants by floor or
suite number.
Position the directory sign on a wall in the building lobby clearly

visible from the main reception desk and elevator banks. Some
office buildings provide an integrated directory sign, and in some
cases, Chevron will be only one of many building tenants. In these
situations, the existing building directory is most likely sufficient and
appropriate. However, the Chevron directory sign should be used

Industrial Sites
The materials specified for both the primary and secondary

sign family reflect a presentation level appropriate for Chevron
business office locations. At industrial locations such as refineries,
manufacturing plants and truck depots, the specified high quality
construction materials may be substituted for less expensive
options. For instance, brushed aluminum Hallmarks may be used
as a less expensive alternative to the fabricated brushed stainless
steel Hallmark signs or the effect of the brushed stainless steel
material may be simulated by a metallic silver painted surface. Also,
a simplified version of the freestanding signs has been developed
for industrial sites. These substitutions are permissible, and may be
especially appropriate for sign applications that will only be visible
from a distance.
While specified materials may be substituted and finishes achieved

by alternate means, the specified colors, typography, application
guidelines, branding principles, and design intent for each sign type
should never be compromised.
