The Axiom Series by Turkel Design

The Axiom series, launched in 2014 and originally selected as part of the Dwell Prefab
program, consists of 11 standard designs that can be built as is, or customized to suit
our clients’ needs. Today, we offer the Axiom Series and Turkel Custom Homes as
exclusive Turkel Designs.

Each home is designed using a prefabricated panelized building system that

celebrates smart design, resource conservation, energy efficiency, and a predictable
building process. The building components—including pre-cut Douglas fir beams,
factory-assembled walls, windows, floor and roof panels, cabinetry, and interior and
exterior finishes—are packaged for shipping efficiency and delivered and assembled
on-site, worldwide.

Bold Design
Each Axiom home embodies uncompromising attention to detail.

Resource Conservation
Prefabrication reduces energy consumption and construction time, all but eliminating
waste.

Energy Efficiency
Axiom homes are designed to be well insulated and airtight, ensuring lower
construction and lifecycle costs.

Predictability
With fixed-fee and systemized methods, you know what it will cost, how long it will take,
and what we will deliver.

Next Generation Living

Axiom homes are designed and fabricated with tomorrow in mind.

Axiom 1850
1,850 sf / 73’ x 38’ footprint

This is a compact design that affords great privacy to the front, but opens
expansively to the rear. It will be a daily pleasure to pass from the cozy dining area to
the double-height living area—and from there, onto a back deck through a retracting
glass wall.

This efficiently designed home could sit comfortably on a town lot, or take root on a
lakefront property with long views. Doubling as an overflow bedroom, the loft office
upstairs provides a removed space for work or creativity, while maintaining visual
contact with the great room and the views below and beyond. Allowing for single-
level living, this home has been envisioned as a first home, a vacation home, or a
retirement home.

Axiom 2110
2,110 sf / 70’ x 60’ footprint

Many cultures feature houses with rooms grouped around a private courtyard: this
is our take on that venerable tradition. Passing through a flat-roofed entry, the space
expands as you encounter a high, beamed ceiling, sloping upward to 12 feet. This is
the great room - 40 feet in length, it opens directly onto the walled courtyard through
glass panels that slide away into hidden pockets. An especially loved feature of the
room is a 4-by-12-foot window-seat extending into and overlooking the courtyard.
This too has operable glass panels that tuck away into pockets: a charming place to
lie down—even sleep—“half-in, half-out.”

Master suites occupy both ends of this “L” shaped home, each with private access
to the courtyard; an ideal arrangement for a shared vacation home, in town or out.
While being careful to ensure privacy, the outward facing walls stop short of the
overhanging roof, bringing in balancing light and capturing expansive outward views.

Designed for a range of site sizes, this compact home offers a courtyard-like space
off the great room on narrow sites and access to two viewing directions from both
the shared spaces and master suite on larger sites with acreage.

Wrapping around the loft, the double height clerestory fills the center of the home
with light, illuminating the beautiful natural material of the post-and-beam structure
and delivering soaring great room spaces.

This home, appropriate for narrow city as well as broad lots with expansive views,
addresses the street with a private face, while throwing itself open in two directions
through the glazed great room. The dining, kitchen, and living room are grouped in
an “L” shape that embraces a covered deck. Within this “L,” the ceiling heights vary
dramatically, giving each space a distinctive feeling, while maintaining an open flow
between them. Discretely tucked away on the main level, a bedroom suite allows for
single-level living, if desired.

Among the most delightful spaces is the loft office: perched above the kitchen, it not
only looks down on the living and dining rooms, but directs one’s gaze upward and
outward.

A deep covered porch allows for ample sheltered outdoor living while the screened
porch, accessible through a 12 foot retractable wall of glass, allows for seamless flow
from dining area to screened sitting area. The living, kitchen and dining areas share in
a double height clerestory that fills the center of the home with natural light via the loft

This is our vision for urban living. From the entry, you are drawn through a dining area
to a double-height kitchen opening directly onto a secluded patio – ideal for outdoor
dining. Just beyond, large sliding glass panels retract into a concealed pocket,
allowing the living room to spill into the back yard. With a potential bedroom and full
bath off the private patio, this home is designed to accommodate single-level living.

Upstairs, the house bifurcates. At the front are bedrooms, bath and office. At the rear,
enjoying private views of the back yard, a generous master suite is accessed via an
open bridge, overlooking the great room below.

Our vision for living on a steeply-sloped site is a stack of two living spaces. You enter
the upper living space from the uphill side, then walk toward the view as the hill falls
away, leaving you high in the air. The lower living space is tucked into the hill: you
descend to it by an open stair, then walk toward the view, and step out directly onto
the hillside.

The upper living space is an expansive great room, and off to one side is a full
master-bedroom suite - allowing the possibility for single-level living. This level
also features a large screened porch, directly off the kitchen – all sharing in the
same unobstructed view. The lower living space includes a more intimate family
room, flanked by a bedroom and junior master suite. Suitable as a vacation home
or primary residence, this design can be customized to allow for downhill entry if
required.

Designed specifically for steeper sites which may be difficult for conventional floor
plans, this home steps up with a hillside, providing stability to steeper slopes by
working with, rather than against, the landscape. Its low profile and possible green
roofs ensure it blends elegantly into almost any natural environment.

By entering the home from the end rather than the center, the organization allows
for easy access along a hillside, keeping driveways and entry paths out of the views
that are maximized by the linear format. The stepped mass of the building creates
ample roof terraces and a private outdoor courtyard separating the master suite and a
beautiful studio/office.

Our Process
How to Work with Us

Option 1
Choose a
standard design

Choosing a standard plan is the most efficient way to live in an Axiom home.

If one of the house-designs in our collection seems to suit your needs and your site, the rest of the process is
pretty straightforward.

First, we create a 3D site model and show you how the house fits on your site. Then together, we will choose the
finishes – siding, flooring, cabinetry, etc - for the house using this interactive 3D model online.

Once that’s done, we will prepare working drawings showing every detail of the house and site. We will use those
drawings to work up a fixed price for producing and erecting the panelized, weathertight shell of your house. We
will take those plans to a contractor in your area, who will give you a price for the site work and the foundation, and
for all the work needed to add the mechanical services, interior walls, and all the finishes. Don’t worry, we can help
you find and vet two contractors, so that you have competitive bids.

Once you’re ready to proceed, we’ll build the shell in a factory and erect it on your contractor’s foundation. Your
contractor will then use our working drawings to finish your home and get it ready for you to move in.

70
Option 2
Modify a
standard design

Modifying a standard plan offers design flexibility coupled with predictability and control.

If one of our house-designs has features that suit you and your site, we can modify it until it matches your desires
perfectly.

The design process will begin once we decide which fixed-fee design service is right for you. We will have a series
of interactive, online meetings with you during which we will fly through the 3D model of your house on the site. We
will stretch and pull and shift the spaces of your new home until we get it just right. Once we’ve agreed on a design,
we’ll proceed as in Option 1:

Together, we will choose the finishes – siding, flooring, cabinetry, etc - for the house using the interactive 3D
model online. Once that’s done, we will prepare working drawings showing every detail of the house and site. We

Our Process
How It’s Made

Once the design of your new home has been

completed, the latest 3D Building Information
Modeling (BIM) technologies will be used to
custom fabricate the building components
for fast and accurate assembly, reduced
construction times and to lower overall costs for
the building process.

72
Our commitment to sustainability informs our design,
process, and material selection to ensure:
• tighter tolerances
• superior thermal efficiency
• enhanced air tightness and indoor air quality
• minimized on-site cutting and waste
• FSC certification of raw materials
Roof trusses Manufacturer

BIM programs generate information to:

• improve visualization
• coordinate and verify construction documents
• generate detailed pricing
• create precise dimensions for fabrication and
assembly
• engineer the structure to conform to all local and
regional codes and regulations
Factory installed insulation • guide computer controlled cutting machines to precut
and predrill custom posts and beams

Prefabricated component packages are prepared in

the optimal conditions of a climate-controlled indoor
environment and include all the materials required to create
a weather-tight shell:
• wall panels
• floor panels
• roof panels
• architectural grade posts and beams
• windows and doors

73
Our Process
How It’s Made

The ready-to assemble building components are packaged for shipping efficiency and delivered world-wide.

As soon as the foundation is ready, a uniquely experienced installation crew will provide on-site assembly
services for the weather-tight shell, ensuring the highest quality workmanship and the most efficient
installation schedules.

74
A library of standard details has been developed and refined to ensure that your Axiom home is a Turkel Design
inside and out. If you choose to put the final touches on your Turkel Design home by working with us on your
cabinetry design, your kitchen cabinets and built-ins throughout your home can be included in the house
package.

Turkel Design’s systematic approach during both design and construction results in the greatest predictability of
design integrity, construction and material quality, timing, and over-all project cost.
