2.RL.3 Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges
Objective: Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text
Active Instructional Plan:
 Anticipatory Set: Reintroduce the story “Hedgehog Bakes a Cake” to the class. Ask the
students what they can recall happening in the story. Students will then create a
Beginning-Middle-End graphic organizer in their writing journals. Students will then have a
few minutes to turn and with their peers to discuss the story.
 Direct Instruction (I do): Review Who, What, Where, When, Why with the students. Ask
the students what each of those terms mean. Students will then need to answer the W
questions in regard to the story.
 Guided Practice (We do): Teacher will go over the story that they read last week
together. The teacher and students will fill out a study guide for their test that they have on
Wednesday. Students must find the answer in the story and read where they found it.
(evidence) Students will receive participation points based off of the number of times that
they raise their hand to share an answer.
 Independent Practice (You do): Daily Rotations will start if there is enough time after
completing the study guide. The students will be assigned a maximum of three different
stations during the rotations.
Read to self/someone: When students finish reading, “Hedgehog Bakes a Cake”
students must create a B-M-E (beginning, middle, and end) and draw pictures to
correspond with it.

Word Work: Students will choose an activity from the word work wall to complete, using their
spelling words.

When they finish that they will do another empower task card practice with Vowel
Digraphs. Students will have to spin a paperclip on the Vowel digraph board. Whatever digraph
they land on, they must build a word using that vowel digraph. They will build the words on a mini
blue pocket chart. They will also rewrite the word in their journals. They also must form a 2nd
grade sentence using that word.

Meet with teacher: Student candidate will have guided reading groups focusing on
comprehension, retell, vocab, fluency

Listen to reading: Successmaker reading

Closure: Students will review today's objective and say what they learned/practiced today.

Informal Assessment: The students’ understanding will be assessed based on their ability to
answer questions on the study guide. The students must volunteer to answer the questions from
the study guide. Those students who volunteer to answer a question, will get participation points
(a coyote coupon.)
Modification/Differentiation:
The Unicorn guided reading group has surpassed the second-grade reading level. Therefore, they will meet
together to form a book club. These students will need to read a few pages together and then discuss what
happened within those pages.
The mentor teacher will be testing MTSS students on fluency passages using Phonics survey and high
frequency word lists.
