Thank you Yohanes. Before attempting to solve a problem, we need to first formulate it. Our first
formulation is; what is a defoamer and its function on an oil and gas pipeline?
How does defoamer work?
How to get the best-performance defoamer for pipeline that’s also eco-friendly?
And last but not least, How to get maximum profit to maintain business continuity?
Thank you, xx. So now I’m gonna presentate about chapter 3: needs identification.
Customer voices are playing the most important role in sustainability of product’s development.
To understand what customer needs, direct market analysis through industry professionals’ interview and
indirect market analysis through online questionnaire were gathered and analyzed. The customers are
divided into those who will use the product, who made the product, and who sell the product.
75% respondents’ that are using defoamer work in Oil and Gas Industry as the consumer that
often use defoamer for their transported crude oil and gas, followed by 11% respondents’ that work in
Chemical Industry as the producer who made defoamer, 7% that works in Engineering, Procurement, and
Construction Industry, and 7% respondents who work at the Water Treatment Industry.
84% of the respondent wants liquid/aqueous defoamer that has an easy application for the liquid
that is being transported, while 8% of respondent wants powder form, 4% of respondent wants it on solid
form, and 4% of respondent wants it on gas form.
Almost half of the respondents’ problem in pipeline is foaming on the liquid transported, which is
54% of total respondent. The other 27% of respondents claimed that their pipeline’s problem is corrosion,
15% of the respondents claimed that they have scaling problem in their pipeline, and 8% of the
respondents claimed that they have parafine blockage problem in their pipeline.
32% of respondents claimed that the foam was generating on distribution pipe and downstream
pipe, 24% of respondents claimed that the foam was generating on upstream pipe, and 12% of respondent
claimed that they never have the problem with foam in their pipelines. This survey question is needed to
know where there is a lot of foam and to formulate the right defoamer for the area.
Based on the survey, the commonly used defoamer is the one with silicon-based. Silicon-based is
used because it’s a particularly efficient defoamer with its low surface tension, spreading capability,
thermal stability, chemical inertness, and water insolubility.
. 68% of respondents’ claim that they used less than 500 kg of defoamer in a year, 25% of
respondents used from 500 to 1000 kg per year, and 7% of respondents used from 1000 to 2000 kg per
year.
Customer’s considerations when buying defoamer are varied from its price, environmental
friendly, reactivity with fluid in pipeline, long lifetime, remove foam effectively, can be used in every part
of pipeline, remove foam in short time, and easy to use.
Customer needs interpretation represents online questionnaire and offline interview that have been
interpreted into what do customers need and to concept the standard of defoamer product.
