PROGRESS: ARE STUDENTS MAKING SUFFICIENT PROGRESS?

The faculty and staff at Southern High School are committed to life-long learning and improving student
performance. This effort is reflected in their growth and development in district initiatives such as Standards
Based Grading. Previously, teachers increased their competency as they worked on developing a Guaranteed
and Viable Curriculum in each department. Last SY, emphasis was placed on Common Formative Assessments
as well as the in-depth development of Proficiency Scales.

ENVIRONMENT: IS THE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT SUPPORTING STUDENTS, TEACHERS, & FAMILIES?

Throughout the 2017-2018 school year, the environment has focused on providing support. For the students, it
comes in the way of support services and a PBIS framework that centers on positive interactions. Teachers have
found support by engaging in quality Professional Learning Communities in which efforts were made to improve
curriculum, develop and review curriculum maps, review student performance, and adjust teaching practices. The
freshmen academy provides additional supports to students such as monthly team assemblies, individual report-card
conferencing, and recognition of honor roll students.

OUTCOMES: WHAT ARE STUDENTS ACCOMPLISHING?

The school focused on improving teaching effectiveness through the use of high yield, research based instructional
strategies. For SY 17-18, SHS Teachers, improved their practice in creating the environment for learning with specific
emphasis on Component One of Classroom Instruction that Works. 9th and 10th Grade students continue to be close
