Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 3rd
Content Standard Addressed: MCC3.OA.3 Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems
in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and
equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem
Technology Standard Addressed: 3-Knowledge Constructor

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: Optimizing authenticity and encouraging students to explore multiple ways to solve
multiplication problem. Students can understand how to apply two strategies to solving multiplication
within 100 problems.
Representation: Clarifying two strategies and students will be able to review strategies at home.
Action and Expression: Students can revisit information multiple times. Teacher can add other
strategies to page for further assistance.
Lesson idea implementation:
First, a brief introduction of the lesson will be presented to students by teacher. Teacher will then
provide students with a warm up problem. Class will interact in a Numbers Talk, to begin lesson on
multiplication with in 100. Teacher will introduce Inspiration map strategies to whole class after
Numbers Talk. Class will discuss the strategies in small groups and try to come up with other
strategies to solve example problem (12 x 14).
Once students have had a chance to explore different strategies with groups, teacher will select
students that have come up with a new type of strategy to share with the class. Teacher will then add
new strategies to the Inspiration page and publish for students to refer to if needed. Students will then
complete a series of problems in class for extra practice with the strategies that were discussed during
class.
Reflective Practice:
Students will be able to have a great resource of strategies that are well organized and available from
anywhere for reference when studying. This activity can be used as a supplement to the content and
added to throughout the length of teaching this content, which should last at least 3-4 weeks. The
activity could be built on as the students' progress. This activity could also be modified and used for
older and younger elementary grade levels.
