Week 2: Linear Measurement
Vocabulary
Passometer: a watch‐like instruments which should be carried vertically in the shirt pocket or tied to the
leg. Mechanism of the instrument gets operated by the motion of the body and records number of
paces. Thus the problem of counting paces is eliminated.
Pedomoeter: an instruments similar to passometer, but it records the distance instead of paces. For
this, walking zero setting is made and length of pace is set depending on the person carrying it.
Odometer: an instrument which is attached to the wheel of a cycle or other vehicle. It records number
of revolutions made by the wheel, knowing the circumference of the wheel, the distance travelled may
be found.
Auto‐level: an instrument which measures differences in elevation between points on the ground.
Theodolite: an instrument which measures horizontal and vertical angles using a calibrated mechanical
plane and a telescope.
Total station: an electronic distance measurement device that measures both horizontal and vertical
angles and distances
Leader: The chainman at the forward end of the chain, who drags the chain forward, is known as the
leader.
Follower: The chainman at the rear end of the chain, who holds the zero end of the chain at the station.
Sexagesimal system: a system of measuring angles where a complete rotation of a line ( or a circle) is
divided into 360 degrees of arc (°).
Azimuths: a horizontal angles measured clockwise from any reference meridian.
Bearings: a line is defined as the acute horizontal angle between a reference meridian and the line.
