Question 1 [14 marks]

a) A particle moves so that its position vector is given by

r = cos ωti + sin ωtj where ω is a constant.
Show that
(i) the velocity v of the particle is
perpendicular to r . [3]
(ii) the acceleration a is directed toward the
origin and has magnitude proportional to the
distance from the origin. [3]
(iii) r × v is a constant vector. [4]

b) Prove that the circumference of a circle of radius q

is 2π q .
(Hint: Consider this an arc length problem
and parameterize the circle). [4]

Question 2 [16 marks]

a) Suppose F = −3x 2 i + 5xyj . Evaluate ∫ F i dr where C

C
is the curve in the xy -plane, y = 2x2 ,
from (0,0) to (1,2) . [5]

b) Suppose F = xy, − z, x2 . Evaluate ∫ F × dr where C

C
is the curve x = t , y = 2t , z = t 3

from t = 0 to t = 1. [4]

c) Evaluate
∫∫ z dS
S
where S is the upper half of a sphere of radius 2. [7]
