Frank, Priscilla. “Study Says Making Art Reduces Stress, Even If You Kind Of Suck At

It.” The Huffington Post, TheHuffingtonPost.com, 16 June 2016,

www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/study-says-making-art-reduces-stress_us_576183

ece4b09c926cfdccac.

In this article, Frank explains how painting relieves stress, and goes further into

research about the mind when a person paints. Franks research is based off of

experiments where participants provided a saliva sample before and after painting, and

scientists researched it and found that 75 percent of the participants cortisol levels

were lowered after painting. Cortisol is a biological indicator correlated to stress, the

higher your cortisol level is, the more stressed out you probably are. Most of the

participants who showed lower cortisol levels were millennials, the older participants

brains were much more developed and have gone through much more stress so it was

harder for their cortisol levels to change unlike millennials. I will use this research in my

capstone to give a basic understanding to others on why painting is good for their

mind. I will try to convince others to paint and everyone deals with major stress and

once they realize how good painting is for them hopefully they can take painting into

consideration.
Camlin, Team. “Famous Painting Styles Of The World.” Kokuyo Camlin Blog, 13 Apr.

2018,www.kokuyocamlin.com/blog/world-art-day-understanding-different-painting-st

yles-part-1.html.

Team Camlin provides all types of popular painting styles on their article

“Famous Painting Styles Of The World.” They give a list of the most popular painting

styles and give a brief explanation of the origins of those painting styles. They list

Modernism, Impressionism, Surrealism, Cubism, and Expressionism. All of these styles

of art are good to learn even if they’re difficult. Everyone will find their favorite style of

painting and once they find their favorite one they will let their creativity flow and their

mind will start experiencing the positive effects. I will use this in my capstone so people

know there's more than just painting a face on a canvas. People can become more

interested in the styles and will hopefully want to try it. This helps support my project by

trying more styles and getting to express myself through art. As a new painter this

article can help me find what style I want to try and the origin behind it.

Andreea, Codreanu. “Learn The Basics of Canvas Painting Ideas And Projects.”

Homesthetics - Inspiring Ideas for Your Home., 12 Dec. 2018,

homesthetics.net/learn-the-basics-of-canvas-painting-ideas-and-projects/.

Codreanu goes into the basics of how to paint and prepare your board. It's

important to learn this because it is the whole idea behind my project. She gives a

diagram of a paintbrush and calls it “The anatomy of a paintbrush”, in all situations I find
it best to really know your tools because it gives you a better understanding of how to

really use them or helps you feel more confident when painting. Codreanu answers the

basic questions any beginner would ask, so I feel confident using this website to help

me out while I paint. Codreanu shows techniques to get a certain look to your painting

such as using tape or even bubble wrap. I will use this in my capstone because it will

help me get certain ideas to make my painting look nice and it answers a lot of

questions I have about painting. This is a useful article to anyone who wants to paint

because codreanu really dives into the fundamentals of painting and how to achieve

specific looks.

Kosalek, Richard. “Art's Bold New Direction.” Smithsonian.com, Smithsonian Institution,

1 Aug.

2010,www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/arts-bold-new-direction-919458/.

Kosaleks article answers my question “What is the future for art?” because he

provides real statistics and brings up how technology has affected the way we enjoy art.

Kosaleks states “In the future, the art world will be even more liberated to make use of

all the media around us” meaning a lot of media companies will use art to catch the

consumers eyes to their product. This topic makes me curious on how art will be in the

future, it makes me wonder how art will be perceived by others and how companies will

use it to sell a product like they do now, but make it more advanced. I also wonder if

people are still going to be painting the traditional way on a canvas or will it all just turn

to digital. The rise of digital artwork is soaring already and has been for the past
decade. I will use this topic in my capstone to make the audience curious about the

direction of artwork and hopefully they will look up the topic.

Yablonsky , Linda. “What Makes a Painting a Painting? -.” ARTnews, 26 Jan. 2012,

www.artnews.com/2005/04/01/what-makes-a-painting-a-painting/.

My simple question is “What is a painting” knowing what it really is and not just

paint on a surface helps the audience get a much more deeper understanding of why

so many people deeply appreciate art. Yablonsky uses quotes from multiple artists on

their answers to what a painting is and how they perceive it. They really talk about the

simplistics of a painting and state “its anything that deals with paint” or “A painting has

to be made of paint or paint like materials.” They make it sound like you can paint with

anything and that is the true beauty of art, it can be anything you want it to be. I want to

use this topic in my capstone to show the audience that if they put their mind to it they

can really make art. People need to know that they make make a painting what they

want it to be, it can be full of symbolism or it can just be a straight up tree, it's what they

put their mind to.
