5. Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken
to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic
achievement?

I have lived a life of great difficulty; more than anyone my age should ever bear.
I’ve lost two father figures, experienced occasional homelessness, and live in
poverty. At five, my biological parents got divorced and I was forced to move to
the United States. When my mother remarried in 2012, she gave birth to my
younger-half brother. Unfortunately, our semi-nuclear family did not last for very
long as my step-father unexpectedly passed my Freshman year from Stage III
Cancer, which took a drastic toll on my family. Not only did we suffer financially,
my mother’s emotional health plummeted; she became increasingly anxious and
dependent on me and my older brother for financial and emotional security. She
stopped working, going outside, and even taking responsibility of my younger
brother. This came as a very large burden to me and my older brother, who had to
give up going to college in order to fully support a family of four. Having done this
for the past three years, he has grown resentful and distant; seeing what has
happened to my brother, I also worry this will be my future.

For the last three years, I have battled my family in my attempts to pursue college.
My mother constantly discourages me from applying to school, telling me she
doesn’t know what she would do without me. However, I still have aspirations to
attend college and find the career that I am passionate doing. Teachers at my
school regularly encourage me, but my mother’s pressure to work immediately
after graduation in order to support her and my younger brother weigh heavily
upon my decisions. Being the middle child, I feel guilty about applying to college
because the complete financial burden that will place on my family. In addition,
because of my mother’s emotional instability, I would ideally like to stay close to
home to tend to her needs. In my four years of high school, I have come to
understand the necessity of a bachelor's degree in order to achieve monetary
success, the kind that would be able to continue supporting my family.
Immediate Plans
My plans for the next few years is to first graduate high school. After I graduate high school, if I
get into UCLA I want to go there, but if I don’t get in I’m planning to go to community college. I’m
planning to work part time while going to college. I’ll try to go to a college near my house and
commute back and forth. I will earn enough money and try to live on my own eventually.
