Buddhist, Jain, and Sangam literature made valuable contributions to Indian historiography by providing information on important historical events and socio-economic conditions, despite not being dedicated works of history. Buddhist texts describe the foundation of the Buddhist community and subsequent events, throwing light on 6th century BC India. Jain texts point out many historically significant happenings. Sangam literature speaks of literary academies under Pandyan rulers and provides a wealth of material on Tamil social and political life from 500 BC to 500 AD, though its chronology is uncertain.
