Joining Cast Iron Pipe

With Lead and Oakum

Often when working on rough plumbing in a house, we are asked

to put in a drainage system. If it includes metal drain pipes, it is
necessary to join the cast iron pipe with lead and oakum.

Experience: I have worked with lead and oakum in

the Plumbing & Heating shop at Upper Cape Tech. We
set up a mock drainage system using lead pipes. I also
worked on a project with lead pipes when repairing the
school building at Otis Air Force Base. We installed new
lines for the bathrooms there and had to ensure drainage
was set up properly.
