‘This is a scam, we are homeless’
If you get a call
asking for money,
assume it is a scam

EVART — Though she receives
dozens of scam complaints per
month, the Evart Police Depart-
ment administrative assistant
never thought she would bet one
admitting they are scamming
people.
Teresa Swift-Ekart received
a call from an Evart resident
on Tuesday, March 5 claiming
that she received a voicemail
from someone claiming they
were from the US Government
and wanted to make sure it got
reported to the Federal Trade
Commission.
The FTC takes complaints in-
volving identity theft, National
Do Not Call Registry violations,
computers, the internet and
online privacy, telemarketing
scams, credit scams, immigra-
tion services, sweepstakes, busi-
ness opportunities and work-
at-home schemes, health and
weight loss products, debt collec-

Rebranding Committee focused
on how to start marketing the
city to those outside the com-
munity.
At its second meeting March

honed in on what made Reed
City stand out from other com-

Department in Michigan and
that she was calling to verify
the woman was with the IRS. To
which the woman responded, “I
am sorry, this is a scam, we are
homeless, we cannot help it.”
When the woman was asked
they think of Reed City. Member
Brian Hervy said he thought
of Reed City as a place for hard
workers in relation to the facto-
ries in the area but the majority
thought of the crossroads.

Ekart’s findings, the resident in-
formed her they had also called
back the number and was hung
up on as well.
With this being a fresh lead
and a “live person,” answering
on the other line, Swift-Ekart
wrote she reported the incident
to the FTC immediately.
In receiving multiple com-
plaints a month regarding scam
calls, Swift-Ekart makes sure all
of them are reported to the FTC.
“The more information they
have, the better chance they
have to pin down and prosecute
these scam rings,” she wrote.
Swift-Ekart advises if anyone
gets a call asking for money,
they should always assume it is
a scam and that she is happy to
help anyone who any issues dis-
cerning the validity of a call.
If a resident receives a call and
they think it is a scam, Swift-
Ekart can be reached Monday
through Thursday from 8 a.m. to
2 p.m. at the Evart Police Depart-

Elementary students make giving an annual event

REED CITY — G.T. Norman Elementary
students gathered 1,420 food items to do-
nate to a local Reed City food pantry.
St. Philip Neri Catholic Church food
pantry went to the elementary school on
Wednesday, March 6 with five trucks in
tow to pick up the large donation the kids
had put together.
“This is a huge donation for us, huge,”
said Food Pantry Director Nedra Ball.
The students had been collecting the
food items from Jan. 29 to Feb. 16 and the
classrooms who collected the most re-
ceived ice cream as an ice cream treat.
The 1,420 food items, however, is not un-
common for the school to gather, said G.T.
Norman teacher Pam Bloom.
“We always raise around this much. The
kids really look forward to it and they like
to see who can raise the most,” she said.
And a little healthy competition paid off
for Jackie Ringler’s first-grade class, who
raised 241 items.
“RINGLER,” she said.
This is Ringler’s classes’ fourth year
in a row raising the most items for the
school’s food drive. Ringler said her secret
to getting the kids excited in collecting the
food is ...

While Ringler and her class raised the
most out of the entire school, the different
grades also had their own winners. Stacy
Gillard’s kindergarten class collected 57
items; Payton Lupu’s second-grade class
collected 59 items; Dawn Hillard’s third-
grade class collected 204 items; Julie Gar-
ner’s fourth-grade class raised 58 items
and Marie Calabrese’s fifth-grade class
raised 40 items.

expense of living in those
areas,” said Burnosky.
After members focused
on items like being a cross-
road city, location to main
roads and the people who
live and work in the city,
Bailey started a conversa-
tion about how t use that
all to market the city.
“So what I am hearing is
there are geographical and
cultural benefits to Reed
City,” said Bailey. “But we
have yet to have economic
benefits. However, we
can use geographics and
culture as a foundation to
grow as a community.”
On how to best market
the gowings on in Reed
City to draw more atten-
tion to events to those both
inside and outside the com-
munity, Bailey strongly
suggested using more so-
cial media.
“We should use social
media as the primary
source in promoting
events. It is the least
amount of cost with the
greatest amount of ben-
efits,” said Bailey.
There will be some fum-
bling around with that,
though, and some trial and
error involved to get what
works best for promoting
the city, said Bailey.
“We will have to keep
track of the metrics and
change our strategy as
needed,” he said.
In wrapping up the meet-
ing, the committee agreed
that they would continue
to reach out to the com-
munity and see what else
they would like to see come
to Reed City and bring it to
the next meeting.
However, the Rebranding
Committee cannot move
forward with anything un-
til they present something
to council and get the OK.
The next meeting sched-
uled for Wednesday, April 3
will focus on getting ideas

Evelyn Lucille Tomlin
MANISTEE — Evelyn
Lucille Tomlin of Manist-
ee passed away Wednesday,
March 6, 2019 at Munson
Healthcare Manistee Hos-
pital. She was 96.
Mrs. Tomlin was born
June 27, 1922 in Oak Grove,
Michigan, to George and
Edna (Root) Holcomb. She
graduated from Fowler-
ville High School in 1940.
She married Gerald R.
Tomlin April 25, 1942 in
Fowlerville and he pre-
ceded her in death July 8,
2005. Evelyn and Gerald
moved from the Howell/
Fowlerville area to Kaleva
in 1984, then to Evart in
1997. Evelyn moved to the
Cadillac/Manistee area in
2008.
Mrs. Tomlin is survived
by two daughters, Carole
Gilboe of Waterford, Karen
(Randy) Oliver of Manist-
ee; two sons, Robert Tom-
lin of Flint, Gene (Judy)
Tomlin of Arkansas; many,
many grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, and
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; her
husband, Gerald in 2005;
David Allen Grover
SEARS — David Allen
Grover, of Sears, passed
away suddenly and unex-
pectedly at his home in
Evart Township, Friday,
March 8, 2019. He was 55.
Mr. Grover was born
May 27, 1963 in Dearborn,
Michigan to Earl Edwin
and Carol Jean (Brayman)
Baker. David was then

Army. David had been a

1992. He married Nancy
Ann Stevenson June 10,
1995 in Sears. Mr. Grover
worked as an over-the-road
truck driver for over 20
years and recently started
working for Ventra in Ev-
art.
David was an avid
outdoorsman and was
passionate about fishing,
and enjoyed passing that
knowledge on to anyone.
He was a kid that never
grew up and possessed a
keen sense of humor. His
true love and enjoyment
was his family.
Mr. Grover is survived by
his wife, Nancy A. Grover
of Sears, seven children,

surrounded by his family
Wednesday, March 7, 2019.
He was 80.
Mr. Kenny was born
June 30, 1939 in Saginaw to
Joseph M. and Anna (Holi-
han) Kenny. He was a mem-
ber of Holy Family Catho-
lic Church in Saginaw
where he was schooled
and graduated and then
went on to earn a Bachelor
Degree in Science. Thomas
married Carolyn Wa-
chowski on June 24, 1961 in
Saginaw and she preceded
him in death in 2017. They
retired to Hicks Lake from
Saginaw in 1995. He was a
Life Member of the Evart
Moose Lodge 2452. Thomas
was a very loving husband
and his family was his life.
Mr. Kenny is survived
by his daughter Laurie
A. Nichols of Evart, his
son, Joseph M. Kenny of
Evart, five grandchildren,
Ryan, Alisha (Jimmy),
Zack, Amanda, Brieanna
(Ben), and Jacob, three
