EDUC 2632 ICT statement: assignment 1 – learning theory

Gabby Burke
Learning theory is how students learn and social constructivism is one of these

theories. Social constructivism is students learning and creating knowledge and

understanding by experiencing things for themselves and learning from those experiences

by reflecting on them. Students learn and create their own knowledge by asking questions,

exploring more and assessing what they know through real life world problems and

experiments. When students come across a new experience, they compare it to what they

already know about something and either add it to what they already know, change what

they already know or recognise they already know it. For students to actively learn using

social constructivism, there are 5 attributes that when used, will allow students to get the

most out of their learning. These 5 attributes are for learning to be active, constructive,

authentic, cooperative and intentional. Active learning is students looking at results and

information for a greater understanding. Constructive is students building on the knowledge

that they already have. Authentic is learning that is based in the real world that is more

effective than imaginary scenarios. Cooperative learning is learning in groups so students

can learn off each other, building more knowledge when information is from their peers.

The last attribute is intentional which means students must have a goal by the end to gain

the most knowledge from the lesson.

Social constructivism relates to learning tool of ICT because it allows students to

build on the knowledge they already have and present it in a different way using ICT. It also

relates to ICT because it uses the 5 attributes of active, constructive, authentic, cooperative

and intentional.
