1.ABSTRACT
This system is designed to assist and provide support in order to fulfill the needs of
elderly and disabled in home. Automation of the surrounding environment of a modern
human being allows increasing his work efficiency and comfort. There has been a significant
development in the area of an individual's routine tasks and those can be automated. In the
present times, we can find most of the people clinging to their mobile phones and smart
devices throughout the day. Hence with the help of his companion-a mobile phone, some
daily household tasks can be accomplished by personifying the use of the mobile phone.
Analyzing the current smart phone market, most users are opting for Android based phones.
It has become a second name for a mobile phone in layman terms. Home Automation System
(HAS) has been designed for mobile phones having Android platform to automate an
Bluetooth interfaced arduino which controls a number of home appliances like lights, fans,
bulbs and many more using on/off relay. This paper presents the automated approach of
controlling the devices in a household that could ease the tasks of using the traditional
method of the switch. The most famous and efficient technology for short range wireless
communication-Bluetooth is used here to automate the system. The HAS system for Android
users is a step towards the ease of the tasks by controlling one to twenty four different
appliances in any home environment.
2. INTRODUCTION
This has revolutionized the area of home automation with respect to an increased level of
affordability and simplicity through the integration of home appliances with smart phone
and tablet connectivity. Smart phones are already feature-perfect and can be made to
communicate to any other devices in an ad hoc network with a connectivity options like
Bluetooth. With the advent of mobile phones, Mobile applications development has seen a
major outbreak. Utilizing the opportunity of automating tasks for a smart home, mobile
phone commonly found in normal household can be joined in a temporary network inside a
home with the electronic equipment. Android, by Google Inc. provides the platform for the
development of the mobile applications for the Android devices. Home automation system is
a mobile application developed using Android targeting its vast market which will be
beneficial for the masses.

Home Automation System (HAS) has been designed for mobile phones having Android
platform to automate an 8 bit Bluetooth interfaced microcontroller which controls a number
of home appliances like lights, fans, bulbs and many more using on/off relay. This project
presents the automated approach of controlling the devices in a household that could ease
the tasks of using the traditional method of the switch. The most famous and efficient

1.1. Origin
The inclusion of control in the automation system, allows to decide on the development of a
process, manipulating certain variables to get these or other variables to act in the desired
way.
Although it seems a recent technology and currently is in full development, automation dates
back to ancient times.
Nowadays nobody thinks of divine forces seeing an automatic door, it is something of the
day to day that we have very internalized. It was not the same with people of Alexandria
when Herón, the great genius of mechanical engineering of classical Greece, invented an
automatic door opening system for a temple in Alexandria.
Later, in the early 70’s, the Intel company developed the first microprocessor, a 4-bit
CPU named i4004, for the Japanese company Busicom to incorporate it into calculators and
by the middle of that decade it was already incorporated into automatons. It contributed to
give more flexibility because of the ease of programming, as the wired memories
disappeared.
In this way, it was obtained that a house was able to perceive different stimuli (temperature,
light level, presence…) and react to them (regulate climate and lighting, activate an alarm…)
while interacting with humans through different options, like mobile or PC.
At this point, is called home automation to a system capable of automate a house or building
including energy management, security, comfort and communication. It can be integrated
through wired or wireless communication networks, although nowadays the predominant
trend is wireless. It could be defined as the integration of technology into the intelligent
design of an enclosure. The main points of this technology are energy saving, comfort,
security, communication and data accessibility.

platforms operated by companies that own mobile operating systems such as Android, iOs,
Blackberry or Windows Phone.
Frist mobile applications dates back to the 90’s, it can place in the first videogames, ring-
tones, calendars and agendas implemented in second generation mobile phones. The popular
Tetris game was the first game installed in 1994 and three years later Nokia launched the
most widely accepted game named Snake. By the year 2000 the technological breakthrough
of the WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) allowed a greater capacity for the downloading
of games distributed by the telephony operators. But the App real boom came in 2008 with
the launch of the Apple Store of Apple corporation, the release of the first Android SDK and
the later Android Market, renamed as Google Play as a new strategic approach of Google.
Currently, due to the applications, all functions are centralized in a small mobile device:
calls, mail, social network, alarm clock, bank account, photography, GPS and a multitude of
other utilities. The trend is on the raise as more and more users want to carry their life in the
pocket: information, communication and personal and professional resources, all accessible
at any time.
1.2. Objectives
The main objective of this project is to design and develop a prototype of a home automation
controllable from an Android mobile application. Application must be able to perceive and
act and to have various types of operation in order to obtain the purpose for which this
technology was invented: maximizing user’s comfort offering an easy way to personalize
home.
The steps that should be taken to achieve the expected result are the following:
1) Determine the scope of the application and delimit the points that each mode of operation
must deal with.
2) Select the components and software.
3) Electronic design.
4) Program the board.
5) Program the mobile application.
6) Build the house model.
7) Place and weld the components in the model.
8) Test and debug the application.
3. PROTOTYPE REQUIREMENTS
As mentioned in the previous section, in order to achieve the objectives set, first of all
it is necessary to establish the needs of the project.
In hardware terms the most important part is the local controller, an Arduino board, which
will be the core of the application, the one that will be communicated with the mobile
application and where the sensors and actuators will be connected. The sensors needed to
capture desired environmental variables are temperature, lighting, movement and water level
sensors and to control these variables a fan, some LED, an acoustic warning and a water
pump are required. Finally, to make effective the necessary communication between the
board and the mobile will be needed a Bluetooth device.
As for software, one of the advantages of using an Arduino board as a local controller is that
it has its own development environment or IDE (Integrated Development Environment) that
provides facilities for software development. For the other programming part, will be
necessary another software to program the mobile application.

5. SYSTEM MODELLING
The concept of the project is simple whenever bluetooth connection is established the
transmitter and receiver device are ready to perform according to the commands of the user
.microcontroller receives the command through the RX pin and matches with the given
programming code of the compiler and passes the appropriate command to the optocoupler.
Project is divided into following parts
Android Mobile(Android Operating System)
Arduino Controller Board and compiler
Bluetooth Shield
Relays
MCT 6 Optocouple
Andoid Mobile Android is an intent based operating system. What this means from a
user's perspective is a richer more deeply integrated experience. If I am browsing the web
and click on a link to a product on Amazon.com, the context will switch and the product will
be opened in the Amazon app. On iOS, clicking that link would just result in the link being
opened in the browser (often times losing the context of the originating application). Android
allows apps to have a deeper and more natural hook into the operating system and user
experience. For example, in the coming years, when Google Voice finally gets a true VOIP
client, it will be able to seamlessly replace the default calling application. Smart is intended
to provide considerably reduced power consumption and cost while maintaining a similar
communication range. When the Bluetooth is activated on the mobile it will get connected to
the relay switch.
The Bluetooth Shield integrates a Serial Bluetooth module. It can be easily used with
Arduino for transparent wireless serial communication.

Figure 9: Optocoupler
It is a small device that allows the transmission of a signal between parts of a circuit
while keeping those two parts electrically isolated. Inside our typical Optocoupler are two
things – an LED and a phototransistor. When a current runs through the LED, it switches on
– at which point the phototransistor detects the light and allows another current to flow
through it. And then when the LED is off, current cannot flow through the phototransistor.
All the while the two currents are completely electrically isolated (when operated within their
stated parameters . The MCT6 is especially designed for driving medium-speed logic, where
it may be used to eliminate troublesome ground loop and noise problems. remote location.
This project can also be used for following applications:
1) Industrial automation
2) Farm Automation
6. CONNECTION LAYOUT
The above figure shows the connection of the Bluetooth module (HC-05) and the
relay module with the Arduino Uno. This figure shows 1 relay connection with the Arduino
Uno, similarly 9 extra relays can be connected to the Arduino Uno in the above mentioned
configuration having different output pins from the Arduino Uno.
Assemble the home automation circuit as shown in the circuit diagram (Fig 5). Open
Arduino IDE and compile the above program (sketch). Upload the sketch to Arduino board.
Switch on the power supply to Arduino by connecting it to 5V power source. Pair Bluetooth
module with your Android phone. Type password ‘1234’ (default password) of Bluetooth
module. Click Bluetooth Image on the app to connect it with the Bluetooth module. It
automatically connects and displays as Connected in the app. You are now ready to control
the appliances using the app. You can touch the icon to ON/OFF so to control the appliances.
You can control more electrical appliances by increasing the number of channels in the relay.
For instance, using an 8-channel relay, you can control up to eight devices. For this, you need
to alter the source code by adding input commands.

•When the new users want to connect, first download application software and
then configuration must be done.
10. CONCLUSIONS
“Bluetooth controlled industrial devices using Android mobile” was a project based
on microcontroller, due to which hardware requirement is reduced. Embarking of this project
has helped us in developing a team spirit, patience and time management necessary for
today's technical professionals. Hence we can conclude that the required goals and objectives
of our project have been achieved.
