Lesson Idea Name: Parts of an Animal Cell Content Area: Science Grade Level(s): 7th Grade Content Standard Addressed: S7L2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to describe how cell structures, cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems interact to maintain the basic needs of organisms. a. Develop a model and construct an explanation of how cell structures (specifically the nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, cell wall, chloroplasts, lysosome, and mitochondria) contribute to the function of the cell as a system in obtaining nutrients in order to grow, reproduce, make needed materials, and process waste. (Clarification statement: The intent is for students to demonstrate how the component structures of the cell interact and work together to allow the cell as a whole to carry out various processes. Additional structures, beyond those listed, will be addressed in high school Biology.)
Technology Standard Addressed: 1. Empowered Learner 1c. Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways. Selected Technology Tool: ☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☒ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☐ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): https://quizlet.com/_67ycix Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts: ☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad) ☒ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch) Type of session: ☐ Teacher-Paced ☒ Student-Paced Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s): ☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☒ Evaluating ☐ Creating Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Engagement: Develop self-assessment and reflection and increase mastery-oriented feedback by having the immediate Quizlet feedback when doing an activity. Vary demands and resources to optimize learning by letting students choose their degree of difficulty and activity to review class material on the website. Representation: Clarify vocabulary and symbols by pre-teaching vocabulary with pictures and symbols to promote a connection to prior knowledge. Action and Expression: Vary the methods for response and navigation by allowing Quizlet to be completed on the computer or on a mobile device. This makes it possible for alternative methods to complete the activities instead of the traditional mouse and keyboard or touchscreen with assistive technology. Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce the SRT activity. Analyzing models of both plants and animal cells, readings in textbooks, and watching in-class videos. They will either do this at the end of class if they are finished with the in-class activities or for homework if they ran out of time in class. Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply): ☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation Spring 2018_SJB Student Response and Assessment Tools ☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain): Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: The teacher will assign the Quizlet as homework or an end of class activity and the students can practice matching the terms with the pictures before taking the test so they can be assessed so I know if I go on or to re-touch on some of the concepts. Students can complete this on the computers or on their personal devices. Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply): ☐ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No ☒ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10): N/A, view working sample on the Weebly site. Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions? ☒ Yes ☐ No ☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.) Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and display correct response to the class after the SRT activity? ☒ Yes ☐ No Why or why not? I think that it important for the students to know what they got wrong and to have the correct answer available as well. When studying the material again, having these things materials handy will help the content be learned. Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity? After the SRT activity I will analyze the data that Quizlet provides so I know if I should go back and touch on some missed concepts or if I can go and teach the parts of the plant cell. How will the data be used? The data that is going to be collected by Quizlet will help me gauge whether or not the students are grasping the content that has been recently taught. The scores from the practice and learning components of the Quizlet website and app will be used for a completion grade or bonus points while the test portion would be used for a homework grade. All of these components will help understand their learning. These materials can also be used by the students later on in the weeks to as study materials for upcoming quizzes and tests. In class, after the completion of these online activities, we will go over the results and recap and touch on things that the majority of the students missed. Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. I have never tried making my own Quizlet, I’ve always found other ones that pertained to what I was studying but was never perfect. Being able to create a Quizlet that checked all of the boxes that I needed it for was really great and I cannot wait to have this resource in my classroom so my students know exactly what to study and to be able to practice on their own time and pace. Reflective Practice: This lesson idea impacts student learning by letting them learn the parts of an animal cell by matching, learning the definitions, flashcards, playing games, and taking assessments. Having multiple choices that students can review their knowledge with gives them a choice which makes learning more meaningful to them.
