Proof of Efficacy

The purpose of our energy device was to keep a beverage warm for a longer period of
time using a chemical reaction that produced heat. The reaction occurs in the outer, clear cup. It
stays separated from the beverage inside the black cup. The “insulation cozie” helps to insulate
the cup so that more heat is transferred into the beverage. Chemical energy from the reaction is
converted into heat energy which helps keep the beverage warm for a longer period of time.

We did an experiment to decide whether she should have used Calcium chloride or
Lithium chloride for our reaction. We chose the Calcium chloride reaction because it took longer
to cool down when compared to the Lithium chloride reaction. We then did a series of
experiments to see how much Calcium chloride we should use. We decided to use 40 grams of
Calcium chloride and 40 milliliters of water.

CaCl2 + 2H2O → Ca(OH)2 + 2HCl

LiCl + H2O → LiOH + HCl
This table shows information that was collected from the following graphs.

This graph shows the change of temperature over time for the Lithium chloride reaction

We could have done some further testing for our device, but circumstances did not allow
us. We would have tested how the device would have affected the transfer of heat from the
chemical reaction to the beverage, and how effective the cozie actually would be. Theoretically,
the device’s efficiency would be affected by the plastic’s heat capacity and the heat capacity of
the beverage inside the cup.
The change in energy in the Calcium chloride reaction comes from the destruction and
creation of molecules. Chemical energy is stored in the bonds between the atoms in molecules.
When the salt dissolves in the water, the atoms in the molecules start separating. Energy is
required to break the bonds between the atoms. The atoms then form new bonds with oxygen and
hydrogen atoms from the water. The creation of these new bonds releases energy in the form of
heat.
