Recently, my sister and I have started working as daycare supervisors at

Riverside Daycare. We work every Monday and Tuesday starting from 2:50 pm until

the the last child leaves (usually around 5-5:30). There is an average of 8 kids

everyday.

There are many assets to working at the daycare in our school. I get to know

the individuals and their personalities. I get to practice for any future jobs I may have

have that requires patience and kindness. It helps develop social skills and other

things I need like independence. I also get money which is a great thing right now

because, I going to New York in the summer and I know I’m going to be shopping a

lot.

There are many skills I need to have to work at the daycare. I need to learn to

know the kids, this wasn’t hard because I go to the same school as them therefore, I

already know them. I also have to be very patient because some of the kids don’t

listen to what you say and they don’t do the right things all the time. Having good

communication skills is also very important because they’re young and don’t always

understand what you’re saying. It’s also good to know how to do things like crafts

and organizing games because they get bored very easily.

Working at the daycare is an amazing opportunity to think about what I want

to do when I’m older, It has taught me that I don’t want to work with children. Some

of them are sweet and they listen well but when the others don’t I feel bad punishing

them. This leads me to the challenges of the job. I don’t like to tells the kids what to
do, but sometimes we have to for their safety and well being. Another challenge is

having longer days than before. This is a challenge to me because I already have a

pretty busy schedule, and in that I need to find time to spend with my family and

friends and time for activities like skiing or going to the gym.

I have learned many things from this experience. I learned that I need to be

more patient and understanding that not everyone is raised the same way, and

sometimes it’s hard but I can do it. It has also taught me that when I’m older, I will

need to be very organized with the time I have and not to waste anytime.

I did not make any BIG mistake but one mistake I made is that I don’t notice

when the kids aren't following the rules, for example, when they don’t wear their

shoes or when they’re too loud. I corrected this by making a routine in my mind to

check for everything when I come in.

Routine:

1. Snack time. (For them this is the longest part, 30-40 minutes, but they talk

too)

2. Homework(If they don’t have homework they read until the rest are done).

3. Playtime. (This part is very stressful because they’re very loud.)

4. Gym time (This part is also very hard because they don’t like to lose)
5. Quiet time (Usually crafts or drawing)

Responsibilities:

1. We have to make sure they are always safe.

2. We have to make sure they are doing their homework properly and they are

learning.

3. We have to make sure they are ready for when their parents arrive.

4. We have to make sure the room is clean before we leave
