ABSTRACT
The study will focus on the impact of how Filipino college students perceive their parents’
parenting style. (And how it currently relates to their psychological well-being.) College students
will be the primary participants because college is a phase when transition from adolescent to
young adulthood happens.

The researchers would like to have a better understanding of why people tend to act in certain
situations that may be explained by family structures or upbringing. The study is to suggest to
parents what parenting style would affect the psychological well-being of their future college
students the most and encourage them to be more supportive and actively engaging in their
children's life.

II. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Rizal (1879) has written in A La Juventud Filipina or To the Filipino Youth that “Ang kabataan
and pag-asa ng bayan, (The youth is the hope of the motherland)”. The youth is the largest
sector in our society who is considered to be the primary motive force in achieving "change" in
our nation. They can establish an effective and honest government. Also, they can choose
God-fearing, competent and compassionate leaders who will consider first the needs of the
people and will save the country from poverty, inequality, and injustices.

People vary depending on how they were brought up by their parents. Moreover, people differ in
how they perceive the impact of these parenting styles in their lives. These perceptions affect
how people then perceive their stability in life. Findings of the study may help the individuals
better understand what influences their sense of psychological-well being and how it affects
various aspects of their life including their nationalism.

Ang Kabataan ang pag-asa ng Bayan

If the youth has a strong familial pillar in which they can always rely on in an increasingly
demanding and competitive Filipino society in the form of parental presence, and instilling
values and principles that will serve as their moral compasses as they navigate their way in this
world, then the youth themselves will be able to serve as the anchor of this society through
peaceful and troubled times.

● If the youth of today are provided with the right support both familial and environmental
contexts, opportunity, positive habits and behaviors like instilling in them the love for
country at an early age, then the values of discipline and organization will be inculcated.
They can become more productive. The youth will have an enthusiasm to learn and
educate themselves with skills and expertise, which will not only benefit their growth as
individuals but will also serve as an instrument in achieving the betterment of the nation,
just like what Jose Rizal did.
● If the youth is psychologically healthy then there is a possibility that they will become
resilient. In our challenging times, what we need is courageous and principled Filipinos,
equipped with enthusiasm, passion and altruism, to become modern-day heroes in order
to sustain our fight for freedom against the ills of society. Jose Rizal's martyrdom should
lead us to survive the present times and achieve democracy.

IV. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study can help in the advancement of basic literature related to human development, family
structures, and developing nationalism in the youth today. This study provides emphasis on
smart parenting training and promotion of improved and wholesome family life to for an
adolescent to develop a nationalism which could explain the relationship between a
psychologically healthy youth and the youth that Jose Rizal envisioned.

III. RELATED LITERATURE

Jose “Pepe” Rizal’s ancestry was deemed one of the wealthiest and largest families in Calamba
Laguna. One of its proofs would be how their family home is erected at the plaza, near the
church, school, and market. Their family had a well-established reputation, and was known for
being hospitable and cultured as they were able to participate in plenty of social, cultural,
and religious gatherings and events in the community. It is composed of thirteen members – a
family of nine sisters, two brothers (including Pepe), his father, Francisco “Kiko”
Mercado Rizal, and his mother, Teodora “Lolay” Alonso Realonda. They were a family of
“inquilinos”, or those who were granted by the Dominicans with the lease of a hacienda along
with rice farm.

Father
Tiniente Kiko was a hardy, industrious, independent-minded man, from whom Jose inherited his
valiant spirit. He was a gentleman who gave necessary provisions to their family and support for
Jose’s early and formal education. From his father he inherited a profound sense of self-respect,
the love for work and the habit of critical thinking. Although not given emphasis on most of
Jose’s biographies, he was greatly admired by him. In honor of his father, Jose named his
premature son (by Josephine Bracken) ‘Francisco.’ Before his death, Jose wrote this to his
brother, Paciano: “Tell our father I remember him, and how! I remember my whole childhood, of
his affection and his love. Ask him to forgive me for the pain that I have unwillingly caused him.”
And to his father, Jose directly wrote: My beloved Father, Pardon me for the pain with which I
repay you for sorrows and sacrifices for my education. I did not want nor did I prefer it.
Goodbye, Father, goodbye ….”

Mother
Nanay Lolay was a business-minded, well-educated, hardworking, and religious woman. She
was Pepe’s first teacher. Her passion for arts and literature and everything else she learned in
college was shared and cultivated in young Jose. She has seen potential talent in him at age 3,
which, in turn encouraged his ability to write poems; progressed into various art forms he
learned as he grew up. Her spirit of self-sacrifice and religious nature kept the family together.

Parental influence and psychological climate

The first memory of Jose, in his infancy, was his happy days in the family garden. Jose was
given the most compassionate attention by his parents due to him being frail, sickly, and
undersized as a child. Pepe, just like most Filipino boys, has spent the early years of his
childhood filled with parental affection, peaceful, familial joys, - a God-loving family established
by the sacredness of prayers. The Rizal family was able to incorporate among their children the
values of love, trust, morality, and companionship – all of which made their bonds stronger
among themselves. Throughout their lifetime, they were guided by these values and principles,
in which they greatly loved one another, respected those around them, acted with strong
manners, truthful and faithfulness, and helped each other through thick and thin.
