A. Recall / Review

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

Good morning class!

Good morning ma’am
Kindly pick up any pieces
of paper or trash under your chair
and please arrange the chairs
properly.
(picking up some trashes
and arranging the chairs)

Okay, let us now prepare

ourselves for the prayer. Please
lead the prayer Jomar.

Let’s pray classmates. Our

Father in heaven… Amen.

Good morning again class!

Good morning ma’am !

You may now take your
seats.

(Take seats)
Now class, we will have
another new topic to discuss
today but before that, who can
recall about our topic yesterday?

Ma’am!
Yes Grace?

Our lesson yesterday was

all about whole numbers,
counting numbers and integers.
Very good Grace! So who
can differentiate what whole
number and counting number is?

Ma’am!
Yes Gelly?

Whole numbers are simple

the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3… (And so
on) except for fractions and
numbers below 0. While counting
numbers are any
number used for counting things
like 1, 2, 3… (And so on)

Okay! Excellent Gelly!

Counting numbers doesn’t
include zero, negative numbers.
Fractions and decimals. How
about integers?

Ma’am!

Yes Vangie?

Integers are like whole

numbers but then it includes
negative numbers and still no
fractions allowed.

Very good Vangie. So now

class let’s give those who
answered a round of applause.

(Clapping)

B. Motivation

Class! Before we proceed

to our new topic, I have here a
game called “Word search”. The
class will be divided into two
groups and each group must
have 5 representative to search
and encircle the hidden words.
The group who will accomplish
the tasks first will be considered
winner. You will just be given 3
minutes for these activity. Are the
instructions clear?

Yes ma’am!

Proper Questions

What could be our

possible topic to discuss this
evening?

Ma’am for me the pssoble

topic to discuss this evening is all
about exponents.

Excellent! What have you

observed in the table?
Ma’am some words are
already being used in the
previous discussion.

And what are those

words?
Ma’am those words are
multiply, numbers and whole
numbers.

Very good!

C. Presentation of the New Lesson

At this point, we are going

to discuss exponents and how to
express whole numbers into
exponents.

Unlocking of Difficulties

But before that, let us

enlighten our mind by giving
definitions to the different words
that we might encounter as we go
through with our discussion. I
have here on the board column A
and column B. Column A
contains terms or words and
column B contains definitions.
Just match the words with the
appropriate meaning in column B
Do I made myself clear?

Yes ma’am!

COLUMN A COLUMN B
1. Base - The number that is raised to a power.
2. Exponents - The number to which a number is raised.
3. Perfect square - The square of a whole number.
4. Square - A number times itself
5. Cube - A number times itself times itself
6. Cube root - A number that when cubed is equal to
7. Square the given number.
8. Whole number - A number without fractions or an integer.
Okay class let us check if
all your answers are correct.

D. Discussion

Based on the definition

given, what is whole number?
Niko?

Ma’am, whole numbers

are simply numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4,
5 and so on.

Very good Niko! Now Joy,

give another idea of what a whole
number is.

Ma’am, whole numbers

does not include fractions,
decimals and no negative
numbers.

Excellent! Now, can you

give an example of a whole
number, Daniel?

5, 80 and 36 are some

examples of a whole number
ma’am.

How about you James?

Give another example of a whole
number.

Ma’am 22, 18, 24, 46 are

other examples of whole number.

Let’s give all of those who

have answered a round of
applause.
(Clapping their hands)
All of those answers are
correct. Whole numbers are all
positive integers and doesn’t
include fractions or decimal. Did
you understand?

Yes, ma’am!

Now let’s proceed to

exponents. Can you read the
meaning of exponent? Gelly?

Exponent is the number to

which a number is raised.

Good! Can you site a

number being raised by a
number? Daron?

Ma’am 2 raised to the

power of 2.

And what is the exponent

there?

The exponent is 2.

Very good! Or in simplest

way to say it?

Ma’am?

Yes Roxan?

Two squared ma’am.

Very good Roxan!

Exponent is a number to which
how many times a number is
being multiplied by itself. For
example 4 squared. It is also
written as 4x4. And what is the
product, Meriel?

Ma’am the product is 16.

4x4 = 16.
Exactly, Meriel! So class,
in the given example 4 squared or
4 to the power of 2, the number 4
is what we called the base and 2
is the exponent. In getting the
product, we just simply multiply
twice the base by itself. The
exponent determines on how
many times the base is being
multiplied by the base itself. Did
you get class?

Yes ma’am!

Is there other questions or

clarifications class?

Ma’am!

Yes, Rose?

Ma’am, what if the number

is being raised to the power of 3,
4, or 5?

Class, if the number is

raised to 3, 4, or 5 we just need to
use the same method, multiply
the base itself depending on the
number it is being raised. Is
everything clear now?

Yes ma’am.

So let’s now proceed to

square root. Who can read the
definition of square root?

Ma’am!

Yes, Joan?

Square root is a number

that when squared is equal to the
given number.
Correct! Square root class
is a number that when you
squared, it results to a number.
For example class, square root of
36. What is the number when you
multiply it twice by itself results to
36?

Ma’am?

Yes, Sheryl?

The number is 6.

How did you get 6?

Ma’am, when you multiply

twice 6 by itself or 6x6, the result
is 36. So square root of 36 is 6.

Very good Sheryl! Your

classmate is correct class, the
number is 6 and it was explained
well. Who can give another
example?

Ma’am! Ma’am!

Yes, Erick?

Square root of 25 is
another example of a number
being squared.

And who can tell the

answer?

Ma’am!

Yes? What’s the answer

Josh?
Square root of 25 is equal
to 5.

Correct! The square root

of 25 is equal to 5. When you
multiply twice 5 by itself, the
result is 25. And who can give
another example?

Ma’am!
Yes Cathy?

My example is square root

of 49.
Good! And the answer of
square root of 49 is?

The square root of 49

ma’am is 7.
Very good! Another
example?

Ma’am!
Yes, Noah?

Square root of 64 is
another example.
And the answer of square
root of 64 is?

Ma’am!
Yes Tina?

The answer is 8.
Excellent! So all of you
now understand what square root
is?

Yes ma’am!
Any questions class?

None maam.
None so far? Okay, let’s
Proceed to perfect square. Who
can read the definition of a
perfect square?

Ma’am?

Yes Jane?

Perfect square is the

square of a whole number.

Thank you Jane. Base on

the given definition on the board,
who can give me an example of a
perfect square?

Ma’am!

Yes Anton?

36 is an example of perfect
square?

Very good Anton! 36 is a

perfect square because when
you get the square root of 36 it
results to a whole number. And
what is that whole number?

Ma’am the whole number

is 6.

Excellent James! That

whole number is 6 because when
you multiply 6 by itself the result
is 36 and when squared the result
is a whole number which is 6.
Who can give me another
example of a perfect square?

Ma’am!
Yes, Jade?

81 is a perfect square.
Very good! What is the
number when multiplied by itself
results to 81?

Ma’am

Yes James?

The number is 9. When

being multiplied by 9 itself is 81.

Very good James! So

class did you understand our
topic for today?

Yes ma’am!

So, I hope you all have

learned from our discussion. Give
yourselves a round of applause.

(Clapping their hand)

E. Generalization

What was the topic we

discussed for today? Josh?

The topic we discussed

today is all about exponents,
square roots and perfect square.

Very good! And what are

exponents again?

Ma’am!

Yes, Nick?

Exponent is the number in

which a number is raised.
Good! Another definition?
Aside from the one posted on the
board?

Ma’am?

Yes, Kim?

Exponents are the number

in which we can determine on
how many times a number is
being multiplied by itself.

Very good Kim! I guess

everyone here or most of us here
understand the discussion.

F. Valuing

Why do we need to study

exponents? Yes Meriel?

Ma’am because
exponents are also a great way to
simplify a problem.

Good idea!

Ma’am!

Yes James?

Exponents makes
Mathematics much easier in
future year.

Very good James. And

lastly, yes Joy? Are you raising
your hand?

Yes ma’am! It is important

because today many things are
based on exponents such as
compound interest.

Very good Joy! What an

excellent idea about the
importance of exponents in our
daily life situation

G. Evaluation

Give what is being asked

in the following numbers.

A. Simplify:

1. 5x5x5=
2. pxpxrxr=
3. sxs+mxm=
4. a+b+n+a+b=
5. cxjxvxcxj=

B. Express using exponents

1. 4 x 4 x 3 x 3 x 5
2. 8 x 8 x 8 x 8 =
3. u + i + 6x + 2i + 8u =

H. Assignment
