Personal Philosophy of Nursing

Several years ago, I found myself suddenly surrounded by dying loved ones, somthing I

had never experienced before. I remember feeling like I wanted to help; yet didn’t know how to

have a real impact. Being a therapeutic presence for others made me feel incredible, but it wasn’t

enough. I wanted to help heal the sick or be there comforting them in their last moments. I

remember hearing my grandmother call nurses “malayekah al-rahma”, which means Angels of

Mercy in Arabic. From that point on, I realized my dream of having a career that helped others

had to be in nursing. Today, I believe nursing is my calling. Through the process of becoming a

nurse, I have been able to utilize my reverence for the gift of life by providing competent and

compassionate care to all my patients.

My personal philosophy is to provide individualized, safe, therapeutic, and holistic care to

all my patients regardless of personal beliefs. In general, nurses are expected to value human

rights and the worth of human life. I plan to do those things by allowing my patients the

autonomy to be in control of their care whenever possible. I will always consider my patients

desires for their health care and research the best education possible, so they know about the

options they have in depth, because that is my duty as their nurse. Even if I don’t agree with their

desires, I will do everything in my power to make sure they can act in relation to their own

beliefs in a therapeutic enviornment without bias.

As a nurse, I know that the world of healthcare is forever changing. I believe knowledge

is the core of good nursing care. I plan to get certifications in my specialty and follow up with

evidence-based practice to keep providing my patients with the care they all deserve. I also

believe that in order to take good care of others, I must take good care of myself. I plan to ensure

that I have a healthy body and mind by implementing the same things I teach my patients, like

diet and exercise, into my own life.

The following years as a nurse will be consumed with new learning experiences that will

help me modify my practice to be the best possible nurse I can be. I look forward to being faced

with all new opportunities. I believe that taking everything on with a positive and therapeutic

mindset will guide me to becoming a good nurse with a rewarding career. I look forward to being

the mediator between health and illness for as many people as possible.
