What is Rooting? Rooting is jailbreaking for Androids and allows users to dive deeper into a
phone’s sub­system. Essentially, it’ll allow you to access the entire operating system and be
able to customize just about anything on your phone. With root access, you can get around
any restrictions that your manufacturer or carrier may have applied. You can run more
apps, you can overclock or underclock your processor, you can replace the firmware and
delete pre­loaded apps. The process requires users to backup current software and flash a
new custom modified ROM. Rooting can also void your warranty, or even leave you with a
bricked device, and knowing the benefits as well as the risks is essential.

This tutorial will teach how to Root your Redmi Note 2/Prime. To perform rooting on Redmi Note 2/Prime is not as
complicated, as most people would think. There are a couple of ways, this being the simplest. All you need to
remember is to use a Beta Developer ROM. I have personally flashed and tried MIUI 7 Beta ROM and it
automatically will provide the access to root the device.

METHOD ONE:
From your PC/Laptop:­

I. Click the link below and download:­
Hermes_6.2.18_v7­5.0.zip

Please note: In this tutorial xiaomi.eu_multi_hermes_5.10.22_v7­5.0.zip is used for illustration. 
II. Create a “downloaded_rom” folder, copy the Zip file, you just downloaded into it. Transfer the
“downloaded_rom” folder into the Internal Memory of your Redmi Note 2/Prime via USB connection.

III. GOTO Updater > Choose Update Package > stroll to the "downloaded_rom" folder > click on
“xiaomi.eu_multi_hermes_5.10.22_v7­5.0.zip”, as shown below:­

IV. The flash process will start and takes a couple of minutes and the updated images below:­

On your device:­

1.  Go to Security > Permissions > click the top­right gear icon > Enable Permission Manager.

2. Install any apps that require root access eg. Titanium Backup, Flashify or apps of your choice.

3. Once installed open the application, the application will then require root access.

4. To give Root Access to these apps. GOTO Security > Root Access Permissions > Enable those apps that
require root access earlier.

5. Re­open those apps that require root access earlier. Just click next, next, allow & accept to proceed with those
apps.

Well, as I have mentioned earlier, this works on MIUI 7 for Redmi Note 2/Prime, which has provided the root
access without having to install additional applications for rooting.

To Unroot, simply just retrack from Step 5 to Step 1, and you are good as new.

NOTE: Please keep a copy of the BETA ROM, just in case the root access is removed and you could revert to
your backup copy.

NOTE: Root access in recent ROM is removed by default,apparently due to Google’s CTS compliance.

Flash SuperSU using TWRP recovery and Root Redmi Note2/3/Prime

METHOD TWO:
1. Download custom recovery TWRP 2.8.7 Redmi Note 2.

2. Rename it “update.zip” and copy it to the internal phone memory.

3. Go to recovery mode, do I go to Tools > Updater > click (top right) option > Reboot to Recovery mode. Or
switch off the phone, then press the volume up + power button simultaneously, release the buttons after it vibrates
and Mi logo comes out.

4. In the recovery mode. Toggle using the volume up or volume down to make the selection, while the power
button to enter the option. Select English > Install “update.zip” to System > YES. The install will begin.

(Note: In some cases, a er doing the TWRP flash and the recovery s ll goes back to Mi Recovery. The trick is:‐ First  me

a er you flash the TWRP recovery before the phone reboot you have to hold volume up un l the TWRP screen come up.
Then you will be asked to swipe the phone to modify the par on and just accept it. Otherwise if you not do it thephone
will reinstall the Mi recovery back to the stock recovery a er reboot.)

5. If the process is complete select Back > Power Off.

6. Once the phone off, go back into recovery mode, the same way like above, press the volume up + power
button simultaneously until the phone vibrates and Mi logo comes on, then release both buttons. This will bring
you into recovery TWRP, the menu is more complete than Mi Recovery. Here, the touch screen is operational.

7. A reminder will appear when you logged in for the first time, just swipe to the right to approve, then you will go
into the TWRP.

8. In the TeamWin window, Select Reboot > System, swipe to the right to install SuperSU and root your Redmi
Note 2. The phone will then restart.

9. SuperSU app in now installed and you have root access. You can download Root Checker from the Google
Playstore to confirm that it is properly rooted.

To Unroot your Redmi Note 2, just go to SuperSU > Settings > Full unroot > CONTINUE. Your phone will restart
and  SuperSU application will automatically be deleted and the now your phone is unrooted.

Note: For those who have installed the MIUI 6/MIUI 7 Beta Developer with root access, this will not function.

Download UPDATE­SuperSU­v2.46.zip
UPDATE­SuperSU­v2.65.zip

Go to About phone>tap MIUI version at least 5 times to activate the Developer options.

Go to Additional settings>Developer options>USBdebugging>Enable it.

After you downloaded the files, Install MiPhone FlashingTool, and it will installed the required drivers (ADB &
Fastboot) that you need.  As shown below:­

Press the SHIFT key and Right Click your mouse and Open command window here, as shown below:­

To check that the adb driver is installed properly, justTYPE “ADB version, it should return the version of the ADB,
as shown below:­

Turn off your device. Then press the Volume (–) DOWN key and the Power button simultaneously to enter
Fastboot mode. Connect your device to the PC/Laptop via a micro USB cable, and the Fastboot MIUI mascot will
appear, as shown below:­

Move the “CWM_Recovery.zip” you have downloaded earlier,and extract it in the Android window. Click on the
extracted folder and move the “recovery.img” file out to the Android window again, as shown below:­

Enter the commands on ADB prompt, to install CWM, in the following sequence, one after another as follows:­

TYPE fastboot devices PRESS ENTER

TYPE fastboot flash recovery recovery.img PRESS ENTER

TYPE fastboot reboot PRESS ENTER

Your Redmi Note 2/Prime will reboot accordingly. Sequences of the commands being entered, as shown below:­

Now, that the CWM (ClockworkMod) image is successfully installed on your phone.

Next, copy and move, UPDATE­SuperSU­v2.65.zip you downloaded earlier to the Internal memory of your Redmi
Note 2/Prime, to start the rooting process on your phone.

Now, switch off your phone, and go to recovery mode, by pressing the Volume (+) UP key and the Power button
simultaneously to enter CWM recovery mode.

Once in the CWM recovery mode, click “Recovery”, goto “­install zip” goto “­ choose zip from the last install folder”
goto “­ 0/” goto “­UPDATE­SuperSU­v2.65.zip” and press the power button, and select “­ Yes ­Install UPDATE­
SuperSU­v2.65.zip.

The installation will start and after the installation is done, it will show, “Install from SD Card complete”.

Now press ****Go back**** and goto “reboot system now” and press “no”. Now you done rooting the phone.

Download Root Checker form Google Play https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?
id=com.joeykrim.rootcheckand run the Root Checker to see whether the Rooting is successful.

NOTE: Please keep a copy of the BETA ROM, just in case the root access is removed and you could revert to
your backup copy.

NEXT, install the UPDATE­SuperSU­v2.65.zip accordingly to start the rooting process on your phone.

Now you done rooting the phone.

Download Root Checker from Google Play https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?
id=com.joeykrim.rootcheckand run the Root Checker to verify Root access. You should get a picture as shown
