Reducing Crime

What people think about crime? Why crime should be reduced? How to reduce
crime? Nowadays the issues that make people concerned are how to decrease the crime in
communities. Crime gives lots of negative impacts to the societies. Like, the environment is
not safe for the societies to live in anymore. Lots of people think giving longer prison
sentences is the best way to reduce crime. Although some people think that the best way to
reduce crime is to give longer prison sentences, I think there are better alternative ways for
reducing crime.

Many people think by giving the offenders a longer prison sentences will give the
deterrent effect to the offenders. Someone who has committed a serious offense such as
involved in a murder case will be putted into the prison and they will through a long time in
the prison. So they can look at their mistake and could change to be the better one later on.
In my opinion it is not the best way for the offenders, because it will not guarantee that they
will change their attitude after their punishment ends. It depends on the environments of
them and out of the prison especially. If they live in a bad environment, crime everywhere,
of course there is an opportunity for them to make the same mistake. So according to me,
severe punishment such as death penalty is the best way to give deterrent effect to the
offenders. So people will think twice to do the serious offense because of the punishment.

The offenders will be in the same place with other prisoners from any criminal
cases, if they are putted into the prison for a long time. It will make their characteristic do
not change. Even though they will get re-educated in the prison, but the environment is not
support for them to change their attitude. As we know, the environment is the supporting
place for people to grow and develop their characteristics. So they don’t need to be in the
prison for a long time, but they need to get the deterrent effect.
 In summary, giving to the offenders a longer prison sentences is a good way to
reduce crime, so they can feel so regret on their mistake and it will give the possibility to
the to change their attitude. However, by giving death penalty for those who have done
serious offense such as in murder case is the best alternative way to reduce crime, which
will give more deterrent effect.
