Facts

Amongst the river valleys, the Cauvery delta forms one of the most fertile regions in the

country. But lately, Cauvery in Mysore (Karnataka) is in grave danger. Due to industrial

effluents and untreated sewage directly released in the Cauvery river, it is carrying more

chemical load such as Sodium, Magnesium, Bicarbonate and Chloride. Higher amounts of

major ions like calcium, potassium, sulphate, sodium, magnesium, bicarbonate and chloride

were also found in the confluence of tributaries like Noyyal and Bavani. Textile and chemical

industries situated within Mysore are continuously polluting the river. The researchers found

out that contamination of Cauvery river and its tributaries have affected the groundwater at the

various pockets situated in Erode, Karur and Salem districts. It also has the highest amount of

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) per square kilometre area.

Even the complaints filed by the residents of the city against Dyeing Factories Owners

Association went unheard. Even the Municipal Corporation adopted a lethargic attitude

towards tackling the sewage problem and improper maintenance of drains. Jal Biradari a river

conservation group is very much active in the State and is time and again conducting surveys,

collecting samples, creating awareness. The Group also approached the State Pollution Control

Board and the Municipal Corporation regarding the dismal state of Cauvery but were

unsuccessful in making them realise the threat to environment. Even after so many efforts of

the residents along with Jal Biradari, pollution level in Cauvery and its tributaries keeps on

increasing. Draft a PIL using the above-said facts.

To Note: PIL is filed against Central Government, State Government, Municipal Corporation
or any other authority that comes within the purview of State defined u/A 12 of the
Constitution of India.
