Question
A drinking glass is in the shape of a frustum of a cone of height 14 cm. The diameters of its two circular ends
are 4 cm and 2 cm. Find the capacity of the glass -
Answer 1: on
Radius of upper part of glass (r) = 4/2 =2 em
Radius of lower part of glass (rz) = 2/2 = 1 em
Height = 14cm
Capacity of glass = Volume of frustum Fe

Hence, the capacity of glass is 1023 cm’, om
Question 2:
‘The slant height of a frustum of a cone is 4 cm and the perimeters (circumference) of its circular ends are
18 cm and 6 cm. Find the curved surface area of the frustum,
€.Answer 2:
Circumference of upper part of frustum = 18 cm

Circumference of lower part of frustum = 6 em

Height of frustum = 4cm
Curved surface area of the frustum = 1 (1 +77) l

Hence, the curved surface area of the frustum is 48 cm2,
Question 3:
A fez, the cap used by the Turks, is shaped like the frustum of a cone (see Figure). If its
radius on the open side is 10 cm, radius at the upper base is 4 cm and its slant height is
15 ci, find the area of material used for making it.
Answer
Radius of lower part of cap (1) = 10 em
Radius of upper part of cap (r2) = 4m
Slant height of cap = 15 em
Area of material used for making

Question 4:
A container, opened from the top and made up of a metal sheet, is in the form of a frustum of a cone of
height 16 cm with radii of its lower and upper ends as 8 cm and 20 cm, respectively. Find the cost of the
milk which can completely fill the container, at the rate of € 20 per litre. Also find the cost of metal sheet
used to make the container, ifit costs €8 per 100 cm®, (Take = 3.14)
Answer
Radius of upper part of container (r;) = 20 cm
Radius of lower part of container (r2) = 8 cm
Height of container (i) = 16 cm lie
Slant height of container = (= 1y)2 + h® \ if

= 7X 314 x 16 x 624 = 104449.92 cm? = 10.45 litres.
Cost of 1 litre of milk = % 20
Therefore, the cost of 10.45 litres of milk = 10.45 « €20=%209
‘The area of metal sheet used to make the container

= 560 1+ 64-0 = 6241 cme
Cost of 100 cm? metal sheet
Cost of 1 em? metal sheet =

‘Therefore, the cost of 624 1 cm? metal sheet=8 ==; X 624m = 2-5 x 624 X 3.14 = 8156.75
Hence, the cost of the milk which can completely fill the container is ¥ 209 and the cost of metal sheet used
to make the container is % 156.75.
Question 5:
‘A metallic right circular cone 20 em high and whose vertical angle is 60° is cut into two parts at the middle
of its height by a plane parallel to its base. Ifthe frustum so obtained be drawn into a wire of diameter
cm find the length of the wire.
