5 Design for Machine Safety

2.5.1 Machine Safety Strategies


Safety is a prime consideration when designing a machine.
In general, every machine installation must provide adequate safety to personnel operating
and maintaining the machine and also to the general environment.
It is important to ensure that all aspects are considered and that the overriding principle does
not become lost in the detail.
The following must be done as a minimum:
1) Hazard Identification
2) Risk Assessment
3) Risk Control
This forms the basis of the safety strategy for the machine. The entire process should be
thoroughly documented. Checklists can be typically used as a guide.

2.5.2 The Bottom Line


In order to translate the machine safety requirements into a system design specification there
has to be an interpretation of the basic requirements to determine the most appropriate
safety category for the system.
The type of category used will depend on both the risk assessment and the nature and
complexity of the device or system.
Firstly, we need to separate the system into its major components and consider their modes
of potential failure.
This includes: Interlock switch (limit, reed switch, etc)
Contactor (relay, solenoid, etc)
Wiring (cabling, control wires, etc)

The Interlock Switch


This is a mechanical device which performs a simple task (ie opening the conacts when a
guard door is opened). It fulfils the requirements of Category 1 and by the use of correct
design principles and materials it can be proved that, when used within its stated operating
parameters, it will have no failures to a dangerous condition. This is made feasible by the
fact that the device is relatively simple and has predictable and provable characteristics.

The Contactor
This is a slightly more complex device and may have some theoretical possibilities for failure.
Contactors from reputable manufacturers are extremely reliable devices. Statistics show that
failures are rare and can usually be attributed to poor installation or maintenance.
Contactors should always have their power contacts protected by an over-current cut-out
device to prevent welding.
Contactors should be subject to a regular inspection routine to detect excessive contact
pitting or loose connections which can lead to overheating and distortion.
It should be checked that the contactor complies with relevant standards which cover the
required characteristics and conditions of use.
By attending to these factors it is possible to keep the possibilities of failure to a minimum.
For some situations, even if this is unacceptable and in order to increase the level of safety
provision we need to use duplication and monitoring.
