III. PROCEDURE
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
A. PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES

1. Greetings
Good Morning class!
Good morning Ma’am.

Okay class, before you sit down; please pick

up the pieces of paper and trash on the floor.
(Students will pick up the pieces of paper and
trash on the floor then they will sit down.)
Checking of Attendance
Are there any absent today?
None Ma’am.
Very Good!

How are you class?

We’re okay Ma’am.
2. Drill
Before we start our lesson for today, let’s have
first a drill. I have here numbers being added,
divided or both. All you need to do is to give
me the sum or the quotient. Those who want to
answer will raise their hand. Understood?
Yes Ma’am.
Are you ready?
Yes we are ready!
Here are the list of given:
Answers:
1. 2+7+8+15+13 1. 45
2. (34+54+63+23+18)/12 2. 16
3. 54/4 3. 13.5
4. 45+78+3+15+9 4. 150
5. (7+9+8+1)/5 5. 5
6. 72/9 6. 8
7. (4+96)/2 7. 50

9. 75+23+24+108 9. 230
10. 36+90+15+17+89 10. 247

3. Motivation
Class, do you want a game?
Yes Ma’am!
Okay, let’s play a game. The game is entitled
Four Pics One Word. I will show you 4
pictures and a word with missing letters. All
you need to do is to guess the word with the
pictures as a clue. Do you understand?
Yes Ma’am.

FOUR PICS ONE WORD

A_ _ R _ _ E
Those who want to guess must raise his/her
hand. Let’s begin.
(Students will raise their hands.)

What is the word?

AVERAGE
Very good!
In Statistics class, the average of any set of
data is called MEAN.

A. LESSON PROPER
Statement of the Aim

Today our lesson is about the mean of the

ungrouped data. At the end of one-hour
Mathematics lesson, you should be able to
define mean, compute for the mean of the
ungroup set of data, solve word problems
involving mean, and participate actively in
class discussion.

1. Presentation

Who among you tried to solve your average

before? (Students will raise their hands.)

How did you do it?

(Students will have varied answers.)
Okay, let’s see if you really know how to get
the average.

I have here report cards of Ivy and Cardo.

Who do you think has the higher average?
(Some will say Ivy and some will say Cardo.)

Ivy’s card

Cardo’s card

Questions to ponder:
1. How many subjects are there?
2. How did you find the average
3. What is the average of Ivy?
4. What is the average of Cardo?
5. Who has the higher average?
2. Activity

I will group you into four groups and each

group must collaborate on how to solve for the
average of Ivy and Cardo and answer the
following questions in the projector screen.
Write your answers in the manila paper that
will be provided. You will also choose your
representative to go in front and discuss your
answers. Understood?
Yes Ma’am.
I will give you 5 minutes to answer. Are you
ready?
Yes, we are ready!
Start now!

(After 5 minutes)

Your time is up!

3. Analysis

Let’s start with Group 1.

(Group 1 representative will go to the board
and explain their work.)
Group 2 representative, it’s your turn.
(Group 2 representative will go to the board
and explain their work.)
Group 3, present your answer.
(Group 3 representative will go to the board
and explain their work.)
Let’s hear the answers of Group 4.
(Group 4 representative will go to the board
and explain their work.)
Very good! Let’s give each group Mommy
Dionisia’s clap, five claps, five stomps and say
beri gud, beri gud, beri gud!

How did you get the average?

Add all the scores and divide the sum by the
number of scores.

You maybe unaware class but you actually just

computed the mean. Mean is one of the
common measures of central tendency. Central
tendency is a way to describe a data by getting
the central value/s. There are 3 measures of
central tendency and they are mean, median
and mode. Let’s focus on the mean.

MEAN- is commonly referred to as the

average of all values.
 The mean is the score obtained if all
the scores are “evened out”.
Example:
# of barbeque sticks
5, 7, 12

If I was told to make each group of barbeque

sticks equal, how many must each has?
(Varied answers)
If then barbeque sticks are “evened out” (3
from 12 distributed to 5 and 1 added to 7) then
all sticks become 8. Thus, the mean is 8.

The easiest way to solve the mean is just like

solving for the average, how do you solve for
the average?
Add all the scores and divide the sum by the
number of scores.
Very good!

Easiest Way:
 To compute for the mean, add all the
scores and divide the sum by the
number of scores. We use the formula:

Example
The quiz result in Math of Grade 7
students section La Luna Sangre are as
follows: 24, 26, 20, 17, 23, 17, 27, 15,
12, 20, 21, 21, 19, 18, and 22. Find
their mean score.
(Ans. 20. 133)

What is the answer?

The mean is 20.133.

Very good!

You might ask, ma’am what does the

mean imply? In the problem, students
whose scores are above the mean
20.133 perform well in the quiz and
those who got below the mean score
does not perform well. That is how we
interpret it using the mean.

Remember:
 Mean is affected by extreme values.
Extreme values are the very low or
very high scores or values.

Example:

5, 16, 25, 36, 100

-Mean is not to be used because there is an

extreme value which is 100 which is very high
compared to other scores.

4. Abstraction

To recap, what is mean?

MEAN- is commonly referred to as the
average of all values.
How do we solve the mean?
To compute for the mean, add all the scores
and divide the sum by the number of scores.
When should we not use the mean?
When the difference of extreme values is so
big.

5. Application

Find the mean of the given data.

1. A list of five test scores were: 60, 67,

73, 63 and 67.
2. Seven people from Sibalom were
asked how many minutes they lived
from work. The responses were 15, 7,
14, 21, 5, 9 and 13.
3. At the Sibalom plaza, a survey was
taken asking how many cats each
person had. The results were: 2, 5, 3,
1, 0, 4, 2, 7, 0, 2, 7 and 3.
4. A sample of eight students were
randomly selected and asked, "How
many times did you check your email
yesterday?" The numbers were: 3, 0,
8, 7, 10, 2, 6, and 12.
5. The heights in cm of the members of a
University of Antique’s basketball
team are recorded as follows: 172,
183, 185, 183, 182, 184, 185, 183,
175, 170, 176 and 183. Determine the
mean height of the players.

IV. EVALUATION
Valuing: Find the mean of the given set of data with accuracy.
Direction: Solve for the mean of ungrouped data found in each problem.

1. A teacher told the class that he would use the mean value of students' test scores to
determine their final grades. If Mary scored 90, 85, 80, 85, and 100 on her exams, what
will be her final grade?
2. The University of Antique basketball members practice shooting. It is a preparation for
the SCUAA Meet. Their shooting scores are as follows: 23, 21, 34, 19, 15, 36, 25, 23, 15,
and 33. Find the mean of their scores.

V. ASSIGNMENT
Answer the following:
1. What is median?
2. What is the difference between mean and median?
