How Quarterbacks Have Evolved And What It

Takes To Be A Modern Quarterback

Is Size Important ?
Size has become less and less
important as the game has
evolved. Typicaly, back in the
day, NFL teams wanted a
quarterback who was at least
6”3 but now guys like Russell
Wilson, Drew Brees and Kyler
Murray proving that size isn’t a
factor of what makes a
quarterback good.

How the game has changed

Before 1950, teams in the NFL passed only on third down. big
runningbacks ran behind huge
fullbacks—who were sometimes
the main rushers themselves—
and met bruising linebackers.
They did this without the huge,
padded helmets, thick shoulders
pads, and yards of tape.

In the 80’s is when it really started to become the quarterbacks

game with guys like Joe Montana and Dan Marino. The introduction
of the west coast offense changed things for quarterbacks and the
passing game because it allowed wide receivers and tight ends to get
their routes when they were already at the line of scrimmage.

The difference of the role of a quarterback from the 50’s or from

African American Quarterbacks
Lorem Ipsum Dolor February 22, 2019
In 1950 the idea of a African American quarterback would’ve been
laughed at. Teams only wanted the typical white boy to lead their
team. But nowadays seeing a black quarterback is almost the usual.
This all started because of Marlin Briscoe who started his
quarterback career at Omaha University where he played very well.
But when it came to draft day no one wanted him to be their teams
quarterback. But he was drafted by the Broncos but as a cornerback
but he insisted on playing quarterback. He faced a lot of adversity
and racism but after a lot of hard work and fighting he earned his
spot and made a name for himself. Because of Marlin, seeing a black
quarterback is normal. Guys like Warren Moon, Daunte Culpepper,
Darren McFadden, Michael Vick and Lamar Jackson are continuing
to change the game and prove that they can play quarterback.

Time Affecting Stats

The statistics that quarterbacks put up have changed a lot over
time. If the quarterbacks from back in the day were putting up
the stats that they put up today they wouldn’t be playing
because they wouldn’t be doing
enough. An example of this is
Carson Palmer who by many is
considered just an average
quarterback has more passing
yards, touchdowns, and
completions then who many
consider to be the greatest
ever Joe Montana.
Rule Changes and
Injuries

In the 1950’s huge blindside hits to the quarterback from big

defensive ends would keep quarterbacks out of games. But the This is
NFL doesn’t like when the faces of the league are sitting on the list of all time passing yards leaders
the sideline instead of playing. A huge factor to the changes and you can see there’s only a couple of
was when Aaron Rodgers broke his collar bone and was out players that played before the 90’s
for the rest of the year. Now defensive players are not aloud to
land all of their body weight on the quarterback when
tackling them. Another thing that quarterbacks are doing to
avoid getting hurt is sliding instead of getting tackled.
