Lesson Idea Name: Which Sport is Your Favorite?
Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 2nd Grade
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE2.MD.10 Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale)
to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare
problems using information presented in a bar graph.

Technology Standard Addressed: 3- Knowledge Constructor

Selected Technology Tool: Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: The students will be engaged in which they are going around the room asking their classmates
the prompt that is given. This will allow the students to move around and collect data. Then, the students will
use this data and create a graph using an excel spreadsheet. The students will be engaged to design the graph
the way they want.

Representation: The material will be represented in several ways. The students will be shown examples of a
bar graph, pie graph, and picture graph. The students would first gather and collect data, then they would
represent the data by creating their own graph on an excel spreadsheet.

Action and Expression: The different ways in which students can display their answers are a bar graph, pie
graph, and picture graph. The students will be able to explore the different types of graphs and choose the
type in which they want to display their answers and work. The students can create the graph in any unique
way they are interested in. They are able to use different fonts, colors, or pictures.

This lesson can be differentiated for students with other specific needs. There are many ways I can implement
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to support student learning for all students in the classroom. For
example, I can use google translate for English Language Learners. I can use pictures to have the students
answer the questions. They could circle their favorite object on the prompt. For lower level students, I can
assist these students in step by step directions. For students who cannot read, I can include pictures and
visuals. For students who cannot speak, I can have them use a text to speech app. Lastly, for students who
cannot hear, I can write these down and include visuals. I can differentiate this lesson based off of the needs
of my students.

Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)
I will first introduce what it means to collect data. I will then show the students different representations of a
graph. Then, I will explain what the activity is and how the students will go around and ask their classmates
the prompt. After the students have done this, I will show a tutorial on how to operate the excel spreadsheet.
Once the students feel comfortable with excel, I will release the students to start going around the room
collecting the data from each classmate. The prompt will be given in which for this lesson it is “What is your
favorite sport?” There will be four answers to choose from. After each student has collected data, I will send
the students to a computer/laptop to make an excel spreadsheet of their own. This lesson will take
approximately 45-60 minutes.

The students will be assessed on a rubric. I will make it clear to the students that everyone should give the
answer so that all of the graphs would represent the same data. I will give feedback on each individual graph.
This will be a fun engaging activity in which all of the graphs will be unique. To conclude the lesson, I will ask
each student questions. For example, I will walk around the room asking “which sport was the most favorite?”
or “which sport was the least favorite?” This will show me if the students gathered the data correctly, as well
as if they understand how to read the data. To extend the students learning, I would allow the students to
choose their own topic approved by me. This would allow the students to be creative in choosing a topic as
well as the students having more questions to answer rather than all of the students using the same prompt
given by me.

Reflective Practice: This lesson will allow students to learn how to gather and represent data. The students
are gaining knowledge about a topic while using technology. Excel spreadsheet could further enhance this
project in which the students could learn how to use different features. Students could explore different
features as well as input larger data. Technology could be furthered in which I could provide specific articles
or websites that have the students exploring to find data within what the website/article provides.
