INTRODUCTION
The major downturn of oil and gas industry from the mid of 2014 has impacted this industry to find the best
way to survive. Major oil and gas companies have cut their capital and operational expenditure to ensure the
survival of the business, including rig contractors and oil service companies. Many exploration and development
project are suspended because the project does not seem as economical as it used to be. New technologies are
also needed to make operational cost lower and make drilling time to be efficient. International oil companies
such as BP, Royal Dutch Shell, Chevron, Norway’s Statoil and Australia’s Woodside Petroleum have collectively
shelved some US$200bil of their planned capital expenditure on projects due to slumping oil prices.

The data from Baker Hughes suggest that the rig

count globally has fallen about 60% since the oil price

down most of the rig manufacturer and contractor

shares in major stock exchange in the world. This fact
1977 should be considered when a rig manufacturer or con-
tractor decides to design a single rig to suitthe petro-
2014 2017 leum market behavior.

From the fact above, ANDROMEDA team designs a rig that is suitable for the economic condition and the natu-
ral atmosphere of petroleum industry with new technologies. ANDROMEDA rig has the following features that are
shown below :

High Specification with Efficient Time

The rig has new technologies that make this drilling operation to be powerful and can oper-

1 ate faster so the time can be efficient and the cost will be lowered, such as stand-building
machine and ram rig system, and renewable energy source to supply emergency power and
green energy.

High Amount of Safety Measures

2 The rig provides a lot of safety equipment such as offshore evacuating system, airlock sys-
tem, integrated firefighting system, firewall protection, fully integrated fire and gas de-
tection system and large capacity lifeboats that ensure safety of drilling operation and will
make evacuation safer and faster.

Integrated Approach of the Rig System

The rig can achieve faster tripping speed, less power consumption, and time reduction with
3 the Continuous Moving Rig technology that allows to run joined drill pipe and casing plus
drilling continuously while maintaining circulation, real time data delivery with a remote
diagnostics, troubleshooting, and optimization of drilling operation.

RIG SPECIFICATION

andromeda MARK I 4
RIG STRUCTURE
Andromeda is a semisubmersible drilling rig that is designed with a platform-type deck that contains drill-
ing equipment and other machinery supported by pontoon-type columns that are submerged into the water.
The semisubmersible type is chosen for their stability and its ability to withstand harsh conditions and rough
waters. The design concept of partially submerging the rig lessens both rolling and pitching on semisubs. Be-
cause semisubs can float on the top of the water, transporting these rigs from location to location is made
easier via outside vessels, such as tugs or barges, and some have their own propulsion method for transport.

Double Symmetrical
Tubular Leg Columns
Main Platform
Lies at the top at the structure, the deck serves These feet were made for a variety of purposes,
as drilling equipment, production, and life support not only rejected the external load, the foot is filled

andromeda MARK I 5
Half Round Edge and Flat Base Pontoon
The pontoons are ballasted which means that it becomes easy
for the big ships to achieve submersion and buoyancy easily. Also
in case the vessel has to move from the deeper depths of the off-
shore areas to the shallow areas, by pushing out the water from
the ballast tanks, the vessel height can be adjusted. Inside the pon-
toon will be air valves on the upper side to control the ballast wa-
ter from sloshing back and forth to counteract the motion of the
waves in the surrounding ocean. Therefore, the pitch and roll mo-
tion will be minimized. Flat base provides ample buoyancy force
and capsule edge provides excellent hydrodynamics streamline.

X-Cross Structures
This X-cross bottom structure gives additional stiffness and
rigidity to the deck above, and make it stronger without using too
much material.

Honeycomb Structure
Below deck of the platform will be made of honeycomb structure,
a structure with hollow spaces in between. It provides a low weight
to volume ratio of the structure than a solid structure. It also will in-
crease the structure by balancing stretching and compressive forces
inside the structure and make the structure does not easily deformed.

andromeda MARK I 6
Dynamic Positioning System

While drilling and production risers are somewhat thrusters when it is necessary. Information about the

ocean currents, too much movement can break them sors on the ocean floor. Using the information provided

andromeda MARK I 7
RIG MATERIAL
Material is one of the main aspect in designing the rig. A mistake in choosing rig’s material can impact on bigger
failure in the future and expand unnecessary cost. Our rig use carbon steel as its main constituent material, which
its main alloying constituent is carbon. It has high strength even though the weight will still be small, ductility to
withstand extensive deformation without failure under high tensile stresses, and it is relatively cheaper.

Anti Corrosion
As an offshore structure, the semisubs will face the harsh environment in the ocean that will
make the steel structure rusts. Corrosion could shorten the structure life and have a fatal impact
in the future. Without future maintenance, it would impact on the production and economic losses.

Blow Out Preventer
The primary functions of a BOP stack on a rig are for well control in case of a gas
kick and to make the well safe if the rig must disconnect the riser from the wellbore.
On a surface BOP, there are typically two ram-type preventers: one set of shear/blind rams and one annular pre-
venter. Fewer individual components are required as they can be accessed from surface more easily for repair. The
well-control functions of a surface BOP system and a conventional subsea BOP system are essentially the same.
For disconnect purposes, a subsea BOP is equipped with one to two shear rams and a riser or LMRP (lower ma-
rine riser package) connector. For surface BOP, the same components are provided in a subsea disconnect system.
On dynamically positioned rigs, two shear rams are required to accommodate an emergency discon-
nect in case of a drift-off or drive-off event when an emergency disconnect system must immediate-
ly (within a few seconds) sequence shearing of the pipe, sealing of the wellbore, and disconnect of the riser.
