THE MOTIVATION OF OBESE PEOPLE AND HOW THEY EMBRACE… 1

1.0 Introduction
In our country the number of obese people is growing and growing, the reason is we are
rich in so many abundant resources that provide us food. Many Filipino found out obese and
being obese is unhealthy, it can cause many diseases that may lead to death. Despite of obesity,
the amazing traits that many obese have is they didn’t lose their confidence. They embrace their
physical characteristic with full of motivation and self-confidence.
Philippines now near epicenter of obesity in the Pacific. This could worry us. There are
many obese Chinese and Indians in the Asia Pacific and Filipinos as big Asia in number are
catching up. A shocking statement that most of the people are not aware of. Although our genes
play a role in our body weight, there are other factors involved. In many places in the world,
particularly our country, we have plenty of nutrient-rich food to eat and easy access to fattening
fast food and sweets. Also, because of our modern lifestyles, we are not as active as we once
were. The end result, we are eating more calories than we can burn.
Obesity and overweight are terms to use to describe a level of excess weight that’s
considered unhealthy for our body size. One way to determine if we are overweight or obese is to
figure out our body mass index (BMI), a calculation we make by dividing our weight in kilogram
by the square of our height in meters (kg/m2).
The main aim of the study was to look carefully on the life of obese people and how they
cope up in our society. It also aim to investigate on the adjustment, psychological struggles, and
how they empower themselves towards building self-confidence despite of their physiques. The
roles and motivation of the respondent will be studied and how they accept and embrace
themselves.
The researchers believe that the topic will be significance to obese people and other
individual in the society that will enable them to attain better understanding, to generate an
awareness and will serve as an eye opener to those person who constantly criticize obese people.

2.0 Background

2.1 Theoretical Framework

This research was inclined to the Stanley Coopersmith’s Self-Esteem Theory in 1967
which explains that self-esteem is routed in early childhood with a foundation of trust,
unconditional love and security, impacted on as life progresses by a combination of positive and
negative evaluations.

2.1.2 Conceptual Framework

Figure 1: Conceptual Framework

The focus of the research is to study and describe the motivation of obese people and how
they embrace their physical characteristics towards building self-confidence by adopting thematic
approach.
This study focuses on the variables which are the family, friends, society and media that
impacts directly on the participants which are obese people and their attributes or the skills they
acquired such as independence, courageous, optimistic, self-determined that consequently helps
in building their self-confidence.

2.2 Literature Review

2.2.1 Review of Related Literature

Foreign Literature
Individuals are likely motivated to maintain their self-esteem. In fact students prefer a
boost to their self-esteem to eating their favorite food, engaging in their favorite activities, or
receiving a pay check and other things that in their perspective helps them (Bushman et. al,2011).
In addition, obesity is defined as having a BMI or the body mass index that is at or above
the 95th percentile in the same age of both sex. Obese children and adolescents are in the top fifth

percentile of body weight, meaning that they generally have more body fat than 95% of same-sex
peers (CDC, 2013).

2.2.2 Review of Related Literature

Local Literature
The relationship between body image and BMI had been supported, but there’s still need
for more information about to what causes or implies having the body images dissatisfaction, how
physical attributes may influence the development of positive body image, and how media and
health practices affect body image (Torres, 2012).

2.2.3 Review of Related Study

Foreign Study
Nomi (2018) stated that body positivity might help on making overweight people to love
themselves, but implies huge cost to their health and life prospect. The Body Positivity
Movement is not just spreading love. It is inclined to the medically false statement that anybody
can be healthy at any size. Ideally, body positivity should celebrate health, not appearance.
Obesity might seem like a daunting cultural problem. Hence, the good thing is that it can change.
Hill (2017) stated that relatively a proportion of youth with obesity has low self-esteem,
but those with rigid and unfaltering obesity are especially compromised. Weight loss is only
weakly associated with improved self-competence suggesting the value of resilience and aid
comes to improving well-being.
Agrawal et. al, (2015) stated that as have examined the psychological issues relevant with
obesity have been persistent in showing that those with a background of weight cycling have
significantly bear more psychological problems, such as lower levels of satisfaction with life,
lower self-esteem and more eating disorder symptoms than those who have normal and stable
weight.
The BMI values are good identifier of body dissatisfaction risk among young females.
Physical activity owes certain improvements in the physical and psychological parameters
researched (Pop, 2016).
The day-to-day problems, dissatisfaction and stigma also discrimination were thoroughly
relevant with increased BMI and had found that highly obese and obese women have several

psychological and social problems and calls for public health regarding concern in obesity care
(Agrawal et. al, 2015).
Obesity, known to which refer to excess body fat and become a broadly distributed public
health problem. Its prevalence is continuously increasing worldwide. As the prevalence of obesity
increases so does the burden of its associated co-morbidities (Malawi Medicine Journal, 2014).

2.2.4 Review of Related Study

Local Study
Hernandez (2017) stated that self-esteem may be seen as one of visible topics of
researchers since it has already been correlated and tested with different psychological and
sociological factors. This may be due to that self-esteem says a lot about things within a person, a
psychological conceive that peeks to what is within. Different psychological and sociological
literature presents how self-esteem can affect a person’s performance.
Disordered eating can be seen on youths but the media and health professionals are
focusing more on the prevalence of disordered eating among older adults. Disordered eating is
one of the frequent disordered weight control behavior. It can be observed and may have led in
doing this disordered weight control behaviors because of factors, there can be a barging practice
that would be able to help eradicate the use of unhealthy weight control practices, and by doing so
can also contribute in reducing the obesity rate of the population (Obeso & Bullecer, 2017).

2.3 Research Questions

This study aims to know the motivation of obese people to embrace their physical
characteristics towards building self-confidence. The present study will provide versatility and
usefulness for the obese people.
Specifically, it will try to find the answers to the following questions:

Research Question 1: How may the Socio-demographic profile of the respondents be described in
terms of?
• Age
• Sex
• BMI

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

THE MOTIVATION OF OBESE PEOPLE AND HOW THEY EMBRACE… 6

Research Question 2: How does the respondent’s obesity affect his self-confidence?

Research Question 3: How does the respondent build self-confidence despite his or her
physique/figure?

Research Question 4: What are the factors that keep the respondent motivated to embrace his or
her physical characteristics?

3.0 Research Method

The aim of this chapter is to set out the methodological approach undertaken to discover
an individual’s personal experience of being obese. This chapter deals with the discussion of the
research design, description of the locale of the study, the population, the instrumentation and its
validation, ethical considerations to be observed, the data gathering procedure to the respondent.

3.2 Research Design

The study will be using a qualitative approach in narrative writing design which that in
turn rely on the written or spoken words or visual representation of individuals. These approaches
typically focus on the lives of individuals as told through their own stories. The emphasis in such
approaches is on the story, typically both what and how is narrated.
Qualitative research involves a process known as induction, whereby data is collected
relating to a specific area of study and from this data the researcher constructs different concepts
and theories. A qualitative approach was considered more relevant to undertake this research as it
allowed greater capacity to gain more depth and meaning based on individual’s experiences of
obese people along with their beliefs and feelings opposed to a quantitative approach which is
more structured, broader scale and more numerically based.

3.3 Research Locale

The site of the study was conducted in one university in the first class city which is
located on third (3rd) district of the province of Nueva Ecija that has a population of two hundred
twenty thousand and two hundred fifty (220,250). The other one is the first class municipality that
belongs in the fourth (4th) district of Nueva Ecija that we have conducted which has a population
of sixty-five thousand and two hundred ninety-nine (65,299).

3.4 Population and Sampling

OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
THE MOTIVATION OF OBESE PEOPLE AND HOW THEY EMBRACE… 7

A Non-Probability Sampling Technique was establish in this study specifically the

purposive sampling. This involves identifying and selecting individuals that are especially
knowledgeable about or experienced with a phenomenon of interest (Cresswell and Plano Clark
2011).
The researchers selected five participants that will served as informants of this study who
happens to have met the following criteria: the participant was obese by determining his/her level
of Body Mass Index (BMI), the informants are motivated and embraced themselves with
confidence.
The rationale for selecting participants who was obese is by getting the weight, height,
and age of the respondent in able to calculate the level of Body Mass Index (BMI) of the
respondent.

3.5 Research Ethics

Many norms of research promote a variety of other important moral and social values,
such as social responsibility, human rights, and animal welfare, compliance with the law, and
public health and safety. Ethical lapses in research can significantly harm human and animal
subjects, students, and the public (Resnik, 2015). In order to formulate a just and ethical research
study the researchers must follow the research ethics.
The foremost concern of the researchers in using subjects is to treat them rightfully and
ethically. To be given of on co-researchers it is required to have an informed consent through the
study which is sought to indicate clear information and agreement and responsibilities involved
within the process of the study. Furthermore the consent given should include the process,
purpose of the study, possible risk and the beneficence of the study. The researchers are obtained
to ensure that there would be measures to protect the anonymity and confidentiality of any
personal information that the participants given to utilize and fulfill the need of information for
the study. The involvement of having the right to withdraw or decline to participation in the
research is always open.
In addition the information gathered from the participants which they entrusted to be used
only for the begotten purpose of the research study which they gave consent; all information
would truly be observed and secured.
Authors bearing proper citations and other references used based on the American
Psychological Association (APA) were cited and rightfully acknowledge. Any content of the
research study does not oath to plagiarizing any works from any rightful owners and authors.

3.6 Research Instrument

One-on-one interview guide is the only instrument that will be using in this study. The
interview guide is semi-structured in nature consisting of open-ended questions. This allowed the
informants to give their preferred response. The question were adaptable and allowed the
interviewee and interviewer to examine and to have clarification. There is no criteria given for the
participant’s answer.

3.7 Data Collection

In this study we used primary and secondary data collection procedure. In primary data
were collected through a series of interview with the five (5) chosen participants. The researchers
conducted an intake interview about the participant’s profile. Then a semi-structured interview
follows wherein there are sets of questions raised by the researchers. The researchers ask a
follow-up questions to probe as needed for additional information. The interview that has
conducted was phone recorded and transcribed for analysis. The researchers also have records of
observation that has been carefully interpreted and analyzed.
The secondary data is measurements of the Body Mass Index (BMI) of the participants
that will be a proof that the participant is obese.

3.8 Data Analysis

The data collected was used by Marshall and Rossman’s (1990) is the process of bringing
order, structure and meaning to the mass of collected data. It is a messy, ambiguous, time
consuming, creative, and fascinating process. It does not proceed in a linear fashion; it is not neat.
Qualitative data analysis is a search for general statements about relationships among categories
of data. Data was deeply analyze the ways in which the researcher moves from a description of
what is the case to an explanation of why what is the case is the case. (Hitchcock and Hughes,
1995). And once the data is transcribed, it was then coded, analyzed, interpreted and verified.
Transcribing the interview can help the researcher to gain more understanding of the subject from
repeatedly listening to and reading the transcribed interviews. Coding of data was began after
transcribing the interview. The codes applied are keywords which are used to categories or
organize text are considered an essential part of qualitative research according to Sarantakos
(1998). The researchers analyzed, categorized and organized into themes then to sub-themes
which appears through the coding process.
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
THE MOTIVATION OF OBESE PEOPLE AND HOW THEY EMBRACE… 9

The next stage is interpreting the data by identifying and highlighting any similarities
and differences in the data. The final stage is data verification, this process involves checking
validity of understanding by rechecking the transcripts and codes again, and thus allowing the
researcher to verify or modify hypotheses already arrived at previously according to Saranatakos
(1998).

4.0 Results
This chapter are the findings that reported by five participants consist of obese people
that accepted and embraced their physique. Initially a brief profile each participants is presented.
The emerging themes and categories arose in following data analysis as a result of motivation of
obese people were; self-confidence is founded from childhood with a foundation of trust,
unconditional love and security, generate on as life ripen by a combination of positive and
negative evaluations that reflects his/her well-being. The age range of the participants is 16-20
and each participant had an individual open-coding or interpretation of transcripts. A brief
demographic background included to support the following data.
Researchers make the emerging theme and categories for these participants are presented
in Table 1 in a manner which reflects the chapter organization in order to allow the reader to
follow and locate the finding easily. The following related data from the participants is listed
below:
