PREGAME NOTES
SETTING THE SCENE
• The New Palestine Dragons are in the semistate for the sixth time in school history -
and fourth since 2013 - and are seeking their fourth trip to the State Finals. NP was the
2014 4A champion and state runner-up in 1990 (3A) and 2015 (5A).
• Michigan City is in the semistate for the second straight year - and second time in
school history. Head coach Phil Mason led Andrean to the 2014 state title.
• The winner plays in the IHSAA Class 5A State FInals at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24 at
Lucas Oil Stadium.
DRAGONS NOTES
• New Palestine was efficient on offense, scoring five times on six drives despite having
just 12:05 of possession time in last week’s 31-7 victory over Harrison. Junior RB
Charlie Spegal ran for 275 yards and four touchdowns, while senior QB Zach Neligh
ran for 96 yards and threw for 45 - all to senior WR Colby Jenkins.
• Spegal scored his 63rd rushing TD in last week’s win, breaking the state record of 61
set by Warren Central’s Darren Evans in 2006.The mark also ranks sixth nationally,
five back of the record. With 65 total TDs, Spegal needs one to tie the mark of 66 set
by Sheridan’s Brett Law in 1988, and six to tie the national record. Spegal currently
ranks sixth in IHSAA career rushing (7,284), 12th in single-season rushing (2,941),
third in single-season scoring (392) and eighth in career scoring (692). His single-sea-
son scoring mark also ranks eighth nationally.
• Spegal has scored 16 touchdowns in three postseason games.
• The Red Rage defense has held teams to 185.5 yards per game and 9.0 points. NP
held Harrison to 183 yards in last week’s victory, Kyle King leads the state with 17
sacks. He had two of the Dragons’ three sacks last week. David Spegal had the third.
• LB Aven Jones had a career-high 17 tackles in last week’s game. The season high for
the Dragons is 18, set by Maxen Hook in Week 2 against Center Grove.
• The Dragons are 12-0 for the fourth time in school history. NP finished 13-1 in 2013
after winning the regional. The 2014 state champion finished 15-0 and the 2015 state
runner-up was 13-1.
• NP is 3-2 all-time in semistate games, including 2-0 at Kelso Stadium. The Dragons
beat Columbus East 30-28 in 2014 and Castle 56-6 in 2015. NP also won a semistate
title in 1990 against Tell City.
• K Alex Kropp was 4-for-4 on PATs last week and is 92-95 this season. He also kicked
his sixth consecutive field goal, a 30-yarder, just before halftime last week.
• Jenkins became the third Dragon to reach 1,500 career receiving yards in last week’s
victory. He now has 1,502.
• With 3,252 passing yards, Neligh needs 40 to move into fourth place on the NPHS
career passing list and 47 to move into third.
• The Dragons have yet to allow a first-quarter point this season, outscoring teams 289-
0 in the opening 12 minutes. NP is second in the state in scoring (60.5) and victory
margin (51.5) and eighth in scoring defense (9.0).
SCOUTING THE WOLVES
• Michigan City ranks second to NP in Class 5A in scoring offense (45.1), defense
(12.8) and victory margin (32.3). The Wolves’ two losses this season have come to 6A
regional champion Valparaiso and an OT defeat to Homewood-Flossmoor (Ill.).
• The Wolves are on an eight-game winning streak, with an average score of 53-12 in
that span. It includes wins over sectional champs Crown Point and Concord.
• RB Lyric McFarrin had a big game against Concord in the regional, rushing for 221
yards and five touchdowns. After trailing 21-20 in the opening half, the Wolves scored
42 consecutive points to seize the victory. He had TD runs of 47, 20, 15, 17 and 18
yards. MC’s defense held Concord to 86 total yards.
• McFarrin has 1,230 yards this season and averages 12.2 ypc. QB Bryce Hayman has
thrown for 1,916 yards and 28 TDs this year.

SPEGAL REWRITING RECORD BOOK
Junior RB Charlie Spegal has rewritten the
New Palestine record book and has set at least
one state record this season and is closing in on
national marks.
Spegal needs one touchdowns to tie Brett
Law’s 30-year-old state record for total TDs. In
the regional, he broke Darren Evans’ 12-year old
state mark of 61 rushing TDs.
Spegal is currently 826 yards shy of becom-
ing the state’s all-time leading rusher, ranking
ninth on the IHSAA all-time list. He is currently
12th in single-season rushing yards (2,941),
having moved up 13 spots in the regional. He is
also eighth in career scoring (692) and third in
signle-season scoring (392).
Spegal holds NP school records for sin-
gle-season rushing yards (2,941), rush TDs (63),

COLBY THE CATCHER
Senior WR/DB Colby Jenkins is not
just a success on the football field, where
he is one of seven 1,000-yard receivers in
NPHS history. Against Center Grove, he
became the fifth player to eclipse 1,100
yards receiving. He is also a three-year
starter at catcher for the Dragons’ baseball
team, which won the HHC title last spring.
In 2017, he was part of the Dragons’ state
runner-up 4x400 relay team. Jenkins has
committed to play baseball at Indiana Wes-
leyan University.

RANKING WINS
The Dragons are 3-0 against ranked
teams. The season-opening 77-0 victory
over 5A No. 8 Kokomo was the Dragons’
first victory over a ranked team since
beating Whiteland 19-8 in the 2017 season
opener. The Dragons followed with a 31-9
victory over 6A No. 9 Center Grove, the
first win over a 6A school. In the sectional
opener, NP beat 5A No. 7 Zionsville 29-17.
RETURN TO SENDER
The “Red Rage” hasn’t just been
stopping teams. It’s been scoring, too. In
a four-week span, the NP defense pro-
duced three TDs. Against Mt. Vernon,
C.J. Faubion recovered a fumble in the
fumble, setting up a TD for Will Olive. In
Week 7 at Shelbyville, Luke Ely returned
an interception 19 yards for a score. In the
sectional final, Ely recovered a fumble in
the end zone. NP has also recorded two
safeties this season.
 CLASS 5A SEMISTATE NEW PALESTINE vs. MICHIGAN CITY
HHC LEADERS
Junior RB Charlie Spegal finished the
regular season third in the HHC in rushing
(2,164) and scoring (296 points). Senior
QB Zach Neligh was fourth in rushing
(716), seventh in passing (1,045) and
fourth in scoring (78 points). K Alex Kropp
was third in scoring with 90 points. Kyle
King led the HHC with 10 sacks and Bro-
dy Luker tied for fourth in the conference
with three interceptions.
RED RAGE ROLLING
The New Palestine “Red Rage” defense
has had a number of strong individual
efforts so far. The Week 4 victory at Mt.
Vernon featured four double-digit tacklers
- Maxen Hook had 12 and C.J. Faubion
11. Aven Jones and Kade Large had 10
tackles each. In addition, Hook had three
tackles for loss, two sacks and an inter-
ception. Jones had two TFLs in the second
shutout of the year.
In Week 2 against Center Grove, Hook
had 18 tackles - the most since Faubion
had 16 against Columbus East in 2016.
Luker and Ely had 12 each.
NP had three double-digit tacklers
against Zionsville - Jones, Hook and Ja-
cob Hockett.

EXPLOSIVE PLAYS
NP had a number of explosive plays in
the 84-13 victory over Delta Oct. 12. Char-
lie Spegal had TD runs of 21, 30, 28, 27,
61, 37 and 82 yards. The 82-yarder was
the longest play this season. Zach Neligh
threw a 73-yard TD pass to Brody Luker,
the longest pass this year. Colby Jenkins
set up a TD with an 82-yard kickoff return.
OFFENSIVE EFFICIENCY
The New Palestine No. 1 offense has
pitched four “perfect games” this season. It
scored 10 touchdowns in 10 drives against
Kokomo. In Week 3 at Yorktown, they had
nine TDs in nine possessions, and did the
same against Greenfield-Central in Week
6. At Shelbyville in Week 7, the Dragons
scored on all 10 possessions, with nine
TDs and a field goal. The varsity offense
was 9-for-9 against Anderson in the sec-
tional final.
SCORING PROWESS
This year’s offensive output has
produced the third-most points in NPHS
history, behind the 2015 state runner-up
and 2014 state champions. Those are the
top two scoring seasons in IHSAA history.

SUCCESS FACTORING
The Dragons are a 4A school by
enrollment, but playing in Class 5A due to
the IHSAA’s Tournament Success Factor.
NP moved up by playing in the 2013 4A
semistate and winning the 2014 4A state
title. They moved up to 5A in 2015-16 and
were the state runners-up in 2015, thus
achieving the points necessary to remain
in 5A for the 2017-18 cycle. New Palestine
will remain in 5A for two more seasons if it
wins a semistate this year. Otherwise, the
Dragons will return to Class 4A in 2019.
TRIPLE CENTURY
The Dragons posted their first tri
ple-century game of the 2018 season
against Kokomo, as QB Zach Neligh
completed 9-of-10 passes for 176 yards
and two TDs; TE Matt Brown caught five
passes for 126 yards and RB Charlie
Spegal ran for 222 yards and seven TDs.
The Dragons had five triple-century games
in 2017.
Against Yorktown, Spegal ran for 252
yards, Neligh threw for 205 and Colby
Jenkins had 107 receiving yards, the first
200/100/100 game since the Dragons beat
Delta in Week 9 of 2017. It was the first
200/200/100 game since Luke Canfield,
Neligh and Kade Large against New Cas-
tle in Week 8, 2017.

The Dragons are plus-23 in turnover
margin with 29 takeaways and only six
giveaways.

KROPP KICKS 100
Kicker Alex Kropp tied a school record
with 12 PATs in the victory over Delta. He
has 110 points this season and now has
177 career points. He is 147-156 on PATs
in his career (92-95 this year) and 10-11 on
FGs (6-6 this year).
The school record for kick scoring is
128 points in a season, set by current Ala-
bama A&M kicker Spencer Corey in 2015.
Corey also holds the career record 285.
SINGLE-GAME MARKS
The 574 yards gained on the ground
by the Dragons in the Oct. 12 victory over
Delta set a school record. The previous
mark was 565, set Sept. 19, 2015 against
Pendleton Heights. NP also rushed for 505
yards Aug. 28, 2015 against Richmond.
The 84 points against Delta also tied
a single-game record set Sept. 19, 2015
against Pendleton Heights and again Sept.
23, 2016 against Greenfield-Central.
In Week 1, the Dragons set a school
record for victory margin with a 77-0
victory over Kokomo. In week 7 against
Shelbyville, NP set records for points in a
quarter (46) and half (74).

Despite the host Raiders having 35:54
of possession time, the Dragons were
efficient offensively, scoring on five of six
possessions to pull away from the Raid-
ers. Charlie Spegal ran for 275 yards and
four touchdowns, setting the state record
for rushing TDs in a season with 63. Zach
Neligh ran for 96 yards and threw for
45, all to Colby Jenkins. Spegal capped
the game’s opening drive with a TD run,
but Harrison answered with a mammoth
23-play, 82-yard, 12:59 drive that tied the
game at 7-7. NP’s defense forced back-to-
back three-and-outs on the next two Raider
possessions, and the Dragons answered
with scores. Spegal had 164 of his 275
yards in the fourth quarter, including four
runs of 20+ yards.

The Dragons wasted little time in a 78-0
victory over Anderson. Charlie Spegal
took the third play of the game 50 yards
for a TD and would score eight touch-
downs in the game. Spegal rushed for 364
yards, second-most in school history. The
Dragons scored on their first 10 offensive
possessions and also tallied two defensive
scores when Luke Ely recovered a fumble
in the end zone and Jacob Hockett forced
a safety. In addition, Luke Canfield and
Grant Wiegand both scored rushing TDs
and Wiegand tallied his first career 100-
yard game. He also had an interception on
defense. The Dragons clinched the 10th
sectional title in school history with the
victory.

Zionsville 17
The Dragons jumped out to a 14-0 lead
and responded to each Zionsville score en
route to a 29-17 victory at Zionsville. Play-
ing in the rain, QB Zach Neligh completed
11-of-15 passes for 140 yards. Charlie
Spegal ran for 138 yards and four TDs,
while Neligh ran for 120 yards in the victo-
ry. Brody Luker’s interception set up the
Dragons’ first score as NP held a potent
Zionsville passing attack to 101 yards. The
victory avenged a loss in the 2017 sec-
tional, and gave the Dragons a 3-0 record
against ranked teams this season. The
Dragons forced two turnovers on downs
deep in NP territory in the second half to
seal the victory.
