Objectives and Scope

The objectives of this study was to explore the anxieties of second year

nursing students of Polytechnic College of Davao del Sur during their first time

exposure in the delivery room and find out what were the factors that caused

it and in the ways they used to alleviate their felt anxieties.

Findings and Conclusion

The study has shown that all sophomore nursing students experienced

mild anxiety during their first exposure in the delivery room. Thematic analysis

showed that various factors caused their anxiety such as lack of experience,

external factors like the attitude of the staff, and lack of self-confidence. It

has then observed that all of the sophomore nursing students have coped up

iii
with their anxiety in ways such as deep breathing exercises, focusing and

conditioning the mind, observing and gaining experience and learning from

mistakes.

The study therefore concludes that sophomore nursing students are

expected to feel anxious or nervous during their first duty in a special area

such as the delivery room. There is a huge transition from the school setting

to the actual hospital setting. This can be quite intimidating to the students

which causes them to lose confidence and thus experience anxiety. However,

through the intensive and specific trainings the students have already had

during their RLE time in the academic setting and the guidance of the Clinical

Instructor, the students only experienced mild anxiety and have developed

various coping strategies to lessen or minimize their felt anxieties.
