Principles of Writing
 Neatness and Clarity: Your report should be neat and clean. Each
sub-problem must be a clear stepping stone in the resolution of the
main problem. Your page should be easy to read, double – spaced
lines and clear crisp letters, placed attractively on the page.
 Precision: A research report should be crisp with precision. There
should be no room for guessing or for ambiguous or foggy terms. Your
document should be clear – cut and present its information plainly.
Good reports are not written in a hurry. Even experienced and skilful
writers revise their report severally before they submit their final report.

Evaluating the Research Report

Step 1: The Problem

 It should be stated clearly and concisely.
 It must be significant enough to warrant a formal research effort.
 There should be a clear relationship of the identified problem to
previous research.
Step 2: Literature Review
 It should be organized logically.
 It should provide a critique of the relevant studies.
 Important relevant references should always be included.
Step 3: Theoretical and Conceptual Framework
 The theoretical framework should easily be linked with the problem,
not forced.
 The conceptual framework used should be adequately defined.
 The independent and dependent variables should be identified.
 The hypotheses should be clear, testable and specific.
 The hypotheses should logically flow from the theoretical or
conceptual framework.
Step 4: Research Variable
 The dependent and independent variables should be operationally
defined.
 The researcher should identify irrelevant and intervening variables.
Step 5: Hypotheses
 A predicted relationship between two or more variables should be
included in each hypothesis.
 The hypotheses should be clear, testable and specific.
 The hypotheses should logically flow from the theoretical or
conceptual framework.
Step 6: Sampling
 The sample size should be adequate.
 The method of the selection of sample should be appropriate.
Step 7: Research Design
 The research design should be adequately described.
 The date collection instruments should be described adequately.
 The reliability and validity of the measurement tools should be
adequate.
Step 8: Data Collection Methods
 The date collection methods should be appropriate for the study and
be described adequately.
 The reliability and validity of the measurement tools should be
adequate.
Step 9: Data Analysis
 The result section should be organized logically and clearly.
 The type of analysis for the level of measurement for each variable
should be appropriate.
 The tables and figures should be clear and understandable.
Step 10: Interpretation and Discussion of the Findings
 The interpretations should be based on the data obtained.
 The investigator should clearly distinguish between actual findings
and interpretations.
 Limitations of the results should be identified.
 The recommendations for future research should also be identified.
 The conclusions should be justified.
