CHAPTER I

The Problem and Its Background

1.1 Background of the Study

Terminalia catappa is known for its nutritional fruit and possesses medicinal benefits as well.

This is a comprehensive review of the phytoconstituents and pharmacological benefits. Terminalia

catappa has been recognized for its medicinally essential phytoconstituents, such as phenol,

flavonoid, and carotenoid. Numerous pharmacological investigations have confirmed this plant’s

ability to exhibit antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and

anticancer activities, all of which support its traditional uses.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The generation today is having a shortage in water. The activated carbon from Terminalia

catappa will help the community in Angeles City, Pampanga to recycle the water through

cleansing it. Also, to prevent the shortage of water.

1.3 General Problem

Water shortage can cause skin problems, heatstroke and can cause illnesses because of filthy

environment.

Specific Problem

 Will it be easy to make activated carbon for students?

 Will it be possible for the carbonized Terminalia catappa work here in the Philippines?

 Will it be more beneficial to the community?

 Are the materials for this research would be affordable?

Specific Objectives

The researchers aim to achieve the following objectives at the end of the research:

 To determine the use of activated carbon from Terminalia catappa to the community.

 To avoid the shortage of water.

 To recycle the used water, and;

 To help in improving the use of water in Angeles City of Pampanga.

Hypothesis

Null: The activated carbon from Terminalia catappa that is being proposed in absorption of

dyed water is not yet proven that is the reason that the researchers cannot assure that the product

that is being proposed will work.

Alternative: The activated carbon from Terminalia catappa that is being proposed in

absorption of dyed water is not yet proven but somehow the researcher can still guarantee that

it will have a positive effect.

Significance of the Study

The importance of this study is to have an understanding towards activated carbon from

Terminalia catappa. The readers are going to know the benefits of the usage of carbonized

Terminalia catappa and it can make a change in the environment and improve the betterment of

the community. In addition, this study aims to give the readers an additional information in filtering

filthy water and reusing the used water to clean to avoid a serious problem like illnesses.

This study could be beneficial and significant to the following:

Community
This study will help the community to reduce shortage of water. The study will also teach the

community on how to reuse filthy water to prevent the water shortage.

Future Researchers

This study will help the future researchers to improve and make a change in their country, the

world rather. The results in this study contains data that may serve as a reference to future

researchers. This study can further be utilized by using newfound or additional information and

data gathered from the study to fully understand the issue.

Children

This study aims to prevent water-related illness that could cause serious damages to children

in the community. sometimes leading even to their death.

To the Rural Communities

This study intends to help increase the reliable portable water source for rural households in

Angeles, Pampanga, Philippines. The prototype would provide a safer and cheaper way of

obtaining water.

Environment

This study will help the environment through saving water.

Environmentalists

It would benefit them on having an idea on how to save water to avoid the shortage of water.

Scope and Delimitations

This study will be conducted in the Angeles City, at Angeles University Foundation, during

the academic year 2018-2019. The investigatory project covers the process of how improvised

carbonized Terminalia catappa can really turn dirty water to clean water. It also covers the

aspect of how materials from nature an effective source for us can be to make an efficient water

filter. The researchers will use eco-friendly materials to make irrigation filter that will use in

filtering waters. It will be used only in filtering waters and it’s not appropriate to use in drinking

water because it may contain toxins that affect the health of people.

Definition of Terms

 Shortage – it is a lack of something

 Absorption – the process of absorbing something

 Filthy – something covered in dirt

 Carbonized – to convert something into carbon
