Workshop 6 – Project Time Management

In this workshop, we will look at how we can determine the critical path on a network
diagram and use Microsoft Project to determine the critical path automatically.

Exercise 01
1. Draw a network diagram (using AOA) to represent the following information.
2. Identify all of the paths on the network diagram and note their total duration.
P1 : A_E = 10 + 8 = 18
P2 : C G = 8 + 4 = 12
P3 : A D F G = 10 + 4 + 6 + 4 = 24
P4 ; B F G = 12 + 6 + 4 = 22
3. What is the critical path of this project and what is the earliest time the project
can complete?
Earliest time : 24 (p3)
Critical path : 12 (p2)

4. Calculate the float for each activity and total float of each path.4

5. Represent this in Microsoft Project and use the software to automatically

determine the critical path. Check that the results are the same as what you calculated
manually.

Task Initial Final Node Duration (Days)

Node
A 1 2 10
B 1 3 12
C 1 4 8
D 2 3 4
E 2 5 8
F 3 4 6
G 4 5 4

Exercise 02
You have been asked to determine a rough schedule for a 9 month Billing System
Conversion project, as part of your job as a consultant to a Fortune 500 firm. The firm’s
old system was written in COBOL on a mainframe computer, and the maintenance costs
are prohibitive. The new system will run on an off-the-shelf application. You have
identified several high-level activities that must be done in order to initiate, plan, execute,
control and close the project.

1. Use Project 2007 to create a Gantt chart and network diagram based on this
information.
2. Identify at least 2 milestones that could be included under each of the process
groups then write a detailed description of each these milestone that meet SMART
criteria.
Deliverables

You will need to submit your answers via submission box in course portal.

Note: your wok in MS Project need to be inserted with your other answer in .doc
or .pdf file.
