1. Describe your Diocese

Jos Quan Nguyen

Archdiocese of Hanoi, where I was born and grew up, is one of the earliest
dioceses established in Vietnam hundreds of years ago. Since the seed of the Gospel
was sown in the land of the diocese, the Church has gone through/undergone times
of difficulties and persecutions. However, the faith of people in the Archdiocese of
Hanoi, along with surrounding dioceses such as Lang Son, Phat Diem, Bac Ninh,
and Thai Binh, has grown strongly and continually. It covers an area of 7.000 km2.
Currently, It is leaded by Cardinal Peter Vannhon Nguyen and the auxiliary bishop
Lawrence Vanminh Chu. There are 6 deaneries and 150 parishes in the diocese. The
number of parishioners, priests, seminarians, and pre-seminarians has increased
significantly with approximately 315,764 catholics, 3 bishops, 180 priests, 100
seminarians and 130 pre-seminarians. The solidarity is clearly shown among
parishioners, priests, and bishops. I am very proud of my diocese.

hotel for breakfast, and then walked up to the Ham Rong mountain. The journey up
to the peak gave us a panoramic view of the whole Sa Pa town. During the trek, we
also saw an orchid garden, numerous colorful wildflowers and stones in
extraordinary shapes. After that, we enjoyed some roasted food with special flavor
at the foot of the mountain. In the afternoon, we hired motorbikes and rode to Thac
Bạc (Silver Waterfall), one of the highest waterfalls in the country and then travelled
to Cat Cat village where we had chance to witness minority group residents' daily
activities. Nightlife in Sa Pa was fantastic, too. Colorful lights made the town more
attractive. Many visitors and local people gathered at the stone church to take photos
and sing songs aloud. We joined with them and had lots of fun. We also went to the
Love Market and got to know the beautiful wedding customs of people in Sa Pa.
The day after, we continued to discover this beautiful land and prepared for a return
trip to Hanoi. Until now, the trip to Sa Pa is still the most exciting to me.

My typical day consists of several activities. As a pre-seminarian, I frequently

get up at 4.30 am before having a short morning prayer to thank God for giving a
good night. After a 30-minute self-preparation, other brothers and I go to the chapel
and attend the Daily Mass. Attending the Daily Mass plays an essential role in a

written about spiritual life, I have a breakfast at 6.30 am. Afterwards, some go to
school while the other join some home-organised classes, such us catechism, English
or Vietnamese literacy. In the afrernoon, after taking a quick nap, I have time to take
part in personal activities, including reviewing lessons, reading the Bible, practising
playing the piano. Especially, I have an hour to play the sport before having an hour
of afternoon prayer. In the evening, before going to bed, I have half an hour to attend
the Eucharistic Exposition. It is also a way for us to confide in God about a past life
and ask God to keep a peaceful sleep. As a rule of thumb, my day frequently ends
