This school was famous for some time. When a new school opened nearby, many parents shifted
their children to the new school. The new school charged more fees.
The teachers and owners of Paatashala did not understand why parents were willing to pay high fees.
They decided to talk to the parents about this. During the discussion, the parents told them that the
new school had a compound wall, a big gate and the children were safe. There was a nice play-
ground, a library and a laboratory. These were not there in Paatashala and that is why they sent the
children to the new school.
Paatashala’s resources were limited. So, some teachers and the Principal decided that they will find
what they can do with whatever they had. One of the teachers got to know about BALA – Building
As a Learning Aid. Have you heard of BALA?
Is it always necessary to have a games room, a lab and teaching aids for effective teaching and
learning? Is play different from learning? BALA is about how to use the classroom space, windows,
doors, corridors, walls and whatever outdoor space is available as a teaching learning resource. This
needs simple designs, a little thought and low cost. Moreover, children can touch and play with all
the things in the school. Under BALA, the materials used are low maintenance and cheap. Therefore
if something goes bad, it can be replaced easily.
These are some of the questions the teachers and children asked:
Do we make use of the school space in the best way? The answer is ‘NO’. The school space
itself with small changes can become a teaching – learning aid. This will help in activity-
based learning and can be used by the children themselves. So, the building is child friendly
and becomes a ‘teaching – learning building’.
The school should be a safe, joyful place for the children. If there is no fence or compound
wall, how do we create one? Can we make the outside space useful for the children?
Children like the space they are in if it is clean and beautiful. How do we do that? Who will
be responsible? How can we involve children in keeping the school clean and beautiful?
Children should be able to use the school space and facilities without fear. Books in the
library have to be used. All that we have in school has to be used. The cost and maintenance
should be low.
What are the spaces within the classroom that can be used? One of the teachers suggested that doors
can be used to teach angles. The windows can have different shapes. The children wanted a small
corner of the classroom for reading. They did not want desks. They wanted more space and wanted to
sit on the floor on a mat and a desk.
Can you think of all the little things that you can do within your classroom?
Paatashala had two nice big trees. One teacher wanted cement benches and a board to be put under
the tree. The classes could be conducted outside when it is not hot.
They then started thinking about the safety of the children. Paatashala did not have a compound
wall. Cows and dogs came into the school sometimes. They talked to the parents. Few parents
volunteered to make a wire fence to protect the school. The teachers said that it will be nice to grow
small plants to cover the fence. Children wanted to plant two trees on both sides of the entrance.
They decided that they will have a gate for the school with the name. The children and the parents
said that they will paint the gate.
Small changes started happening. Children loved coming to school. Soon, the number of children
who left school reduced. We will wait and see how the new Patashaala looks after a few months.

- BALA అొంటే అొందుబాటలో ఉన్న తరరతి రదులు, కిటికీలు, వరొండాలు, గోడలు, ఖాళీ జాగాలు
అనిన ొంటినీ బోధనా పరికరాలుగా వదుకవడమే!
ఇది స్తధొంచడానికి చిన్న చిన్న ఆలొచన్లు, చిన్న ఉపాయములు కావాల్ల. ఇలా చేస్తత పిలలు

తేల్లకే.
- మన్ బడి ఆవరణను మన్ొం బాగా వాుక్కొంటనాన మా? లేదు. బడి ఆవరణ లో చిన్న చిన్న
మారుప లు చేయడొం వలన్ "Activity Based Learning" సులభమై, బడి ఆవరణ బోధనా
మరియు నేరుచ కనే ఉపకరణొం అయా ొంది.

ె , వారున్న ప్పదేశానిన అొందొంగా, సురక్షితొంగా ఉొంచుకవడొంలో తోడప డేటటె చేయల్ల.
