Debo saber
Para desarrollar esta guía de mejor manera, es necesario que el estudiante logre reconocer el
número de sílabas en un adjetivo:

-Una sílaba (tall, sad, big, fat, etc…)

-Dos sílabas (simple, happy, busy, tilted, etc…)
-Tres sílabas o más (important, expensive, etc…)

Comparative Adjectives/Adjetivos Comparativos

Comparative adjectives are used to compare differences between two people, things, and objects,
among other. For example:

-The kid named Big Joe is taller than a tree.

-The turtle is slower than the rabbit.
-Johnny should be more careful, he could get hurt himself.

*(We use than when we want to compare one thing to another).

Depending on the number of syllables that the adjective has, we must change the spelling of
comparatives:

A) If we use One Syllable word (Adjective):

-We add “er” to the adjective:

Old Older

Tall Taller

Fast Faster

Dark Darker

-If the adjective has a consonant + single vowel + consonant spelling, the final consonant must be
doubled before adding the ending:

Big Bigger

Mad Madder

Hot Hotter

B) If we use Two Syllables word (Adjective):

-In case of adjectives with two syllables, these can form the comparative either by adding “er” or by
preceding the adjective with “more” or “less”. Now, in many cases, both forms are used, although
one usage could be more common than the other:

Easy Easier

Happy Happier

Careful Less/More Careful

Pleasant Less/More Pleasant

*(For adjectives ending in “y”, change the “y” to an “I” before adding the ending).

C) If we use Three Syllables word (Adjective) or more:

-If the adjective has three or more syllables, it will form the comparative by putting more in front of
the adjective:

Difficult Less/More Difficult

Important Less/More Important

Dangerous Less/More Dangerous

D) By the way, there is some exceptions to the rule:

Real Less/More Real

Right Less/More Right

Fun Less/More Fun

E) And irregular ones:

Bad Worse

Good Better

Much More

Little Less

Far Further/Farther
