Shooting Drills

Catch and Shoot

- Students work in pairs with one ball between them
- 5 shooting points are outlined around the net (use cones if need)
- Player 1 begins under the net, with player 2 beginning at the first
shooting point
- Player 1 passes the ball to player 2, then runs in to put pressure
on the shot
- Player 2 received the ball and takes a shot. They then run in for
the rebound
- Player 1 now positioned themselves at the same shooting point,
ready to receive the ball
- Player 2 now passes and player 1 shoots
- Students continue this, moving to each shooting point once both
students have had a shot
- Students move through the 5 shooting points, then back again to finish at the same point
Progression
- Manipulate shooting distance/angle
- Add time limit
- Player to apply more pressure on the shot
KTPS
- Facing the net with feet shoulder width apart
- One hand underneath the ball, and one supporting on the side
- Lift the ball up in front of your head, making an L-shape with your elbow/strong arm
- Straighten elbow and release the ball off your wrist

12 Sets
- Students work in pairs with a basketball each
- 12 cones/markers are placed around the net as shooting points
- Students are to have 4 shots at each of the 12 points, beginning
with a 3-pointer, a shot-fake with a jump shot, a catch and shoot
jump and finishing with a layup.
- One student attempts all 4, whilst their partner is to rebound the
ball and return it back to the shooter
- Once completed all 4 shots, students move to the next shooting
point and the rebounder no becomes the shooter, and the
shooter is the rebounder
- Students continue, moving to each shooting point, switching
each time (students’ shooting at only 6 shooting points)
- Continue until all are achieved or until desired time
Progression
- Increase distance of shot
- Manipulate type of shot – can increase or decrease difficulty
- Have students organised into teams and compete against each other
- Add time limit for each shot/set
KTPS (regular shot)
- Facing the net with feet shoulder width apart
- One hand underneath the ball, and one supporting on the side
- Lift the ball up in front of your head, making an L-shape with your elbow/strong arm
- Use your whole body to push the ball
- Straighten elbow and release the ball off your wrist
KTPS (layup)
- Dribble towards the basket from the right side and leap up off your left leg with a high right
knee, and grab the ball with both hands
- While in the air, roll/release the ball off your right hand with your fingers to bounce it off the
backboard into the basket

Celtic Drill
- Students are organised into pairs/threes with one ball between them
- 5 shooting points are outlined to the students (can be using cones)
- The aim of the drill is to get all the way around the shooting points
and back, in a given time
- One at a time, students have to get two shots in at the marker before
moving onto the next one. Their partner is to rebound the ball as they
go
- Once they get to the end and complete 2 shots, they are to complete
2 more at the spot, then continue back around
- Students aim to complete all shots in the chosen time (approx. 2 – 3
min – will depend on student abilities)
- Once completed, students switch and the rebounder now attempts
the shots
Progression
- Minimise time allocated to complete the drill
- Change shooting distance/angle
- Include a variety of types of shots
KTPS
- Facing the net with feet shoulder width apart
- One hand underneath the ball, and one supporting on the side
- Lift the ball up in front of your head, making an L-shape with your elbow/strong arm
- Straighten elbow and release the ball off your wrist
