An Essay on the Development of Nursing Informatics

Taking care of one’s health and obtaining information from it has been observed for a
very long time. That information that was simple and easy to learn became much more complex.
Having a background aids us in building a foundation for our future, making it more resistant
and in a solid way. Florence Nightingale is considered the first health care provider who started
documenting and collecting data for statistical analysis. She has proved that the modern nursing
practice is an information dependable profession. Nurses must be accurate and have timely
access to appropriate information in order to perform different activities that involve patient care,
administration, consulting, education and training. Nursing informatics is not just about the use
of computers in nursing care. Technological tools represent one aspect which we should
consider; however, science is the foundation. Nurses must continue to ensure that computer
technology remains an integral part of professional practice and must remember that it is still a
mere machine. The information we share, we record and we analyze is the main aspect of
nursing informatics and it will stand as a mark of our contribution in the healthcare delivery
system. It also allows us to develop new models that could better utilize resources to improve
quality of care and professional performance. Nurses develop in many ways and are versatile to
their work. They adapt and their responsibilities evolve one after another time after time.
