TRANSPONDER OPERATING PROCEDURE
It is advised that Pilot in Command (PIC) must keep the transponder mode
STBY or SQUAWK STBY on all taxiways and parking stands.
Pilot must keep the transponder in TCAS mode or SQUAWK Charlie on
entering the runway and in air throughout the flight
Departing ACFT : PIC should switch to SQUAWK C only after receiving
line up or takeoff clearance and SQUAWK STBY is always practiced behind
the holding point of active runway
Arriving ACFT : It is responsible for PIC to switch transponder to STBY mode
as soon as vacating the active runway without any further instruction from
controllers
Transponder Codes : Controllers usually assign reserved transponder codes
when online. In case the controller is offline, it is mandatory for PIC to squawk
1200 for VFR flight and squawk 2000 for IFR flight.
Reserved Transponder Codes for Chennai FIR:

International Domestic
0600 – 0677 2700 – 2777
0200 – 0237

Special Transponder Codes: 7700 – Emergency | 7600 – Radio Failure

OUTBOUND TRAFFICS
Pre-Departure Clearance:
Pilots can get pre-departure clearance on Chennai Ground Frequency
121.9 since no separate frequency is available for getting pre-departure
clearance.
On initial contact, it is advised that PIC should report parking stand and
current ATIS information identifier.

Data Link Departure Clearance (CPDLC):

In IVAO, pre-departure clearance can be obtained using datalink through
www.virtual-cpdlc.com. This service is available only if mentioned in ATIS
that “Pre-departure clearance available at www.virtual-cpdlc.com”. Pilot
shall acknowledge clearance within 5 minutes after receiving clearance.
In the event of any doubts or system-related difficulties, voice procedures
shall be resumed. If the request is rejected, pilot shall revert to voice
procedure.

Push-back operations:
Push-back and start-up clearance is required for all stands. Push-back
should be initiated facing specific direction as instructed by ATC to
ensure safe and expedite traffic flow on ground.
During Gate Hold in force due to traffic congestion, ATC may deny or delay
push-back clearance. Pilots are requested to be patient in such occasions.

Taxi operations:
PIC should strictly follow assigned taxi routes and all hold short instruction
to avoid traffic collision. Following wrong taxi routes may sometimes lead to
closure of some controlled movement areas. In case, pilot lost the route or
in confusion he can request for progressive taxi.

Page 6
Departure:
After airborne pilot shall initially climb to FL060 through any of the
following cleared standard RNAV Departure. Meanwhile you will be
transferred to APP/DEP for further climb.

Taxi to Gate:
PIC should follow instructed taxi routes to assigned parking stand.
COMMUNICATION FAILURE UNDER RADAR VECTORS
Radio failure prior interception ACFT should maintain last
of final approach course assigned altitude or 3000’
(whichever is higher) and DCT
to MMV VOR to join holding
Radio failure after interception ACFT can continue approach, if
of final approach course visual and land or go around and
carryout missed approach
procedure and join MMV VOR
holding
After entering hold, carry out published ILS or VOR procedure for RWY 07

It is recommended to simulate radio failure only when advised by trainer or

examiner during On Job Training (OJT) or Controller Practical Examination. When
simulating communication failure pilot should follow the communication failure
procedures and must squawk 7600. If the pilot seemed to be deviating from course,
text communication will be established by controllers.
Note: The above radio failure procedure strictly applicable only when aircraft is on radar vectors

CHENNAI OCEANIC RADIO
Chennai Oceanic Radio Frequency
126.15 MHz

East Bound Traffic following SIDAT and OXENA RNAV DEP must start
giving position report from waypoint IDASO / AVNOS / GIRNA to Chennai
Oceanic Radio in voice or using CPDLC.
Note : Pilots flying east bound please read Indian Oceanic Procedure in
following link http://www.ivao.in/resources/india-oceanic-procedures/

VFR OPERATIONS
VFR operations are permitted in Chennai if the airport is at Visual
Meteorological Conditions (VMC).
Parameter VMC conditions
Flight Visibility Above FL100 – 8km
Below FL100 – 5km
Ceiling 1500’ AGL
PIC is responsible for clear of clouds and in sight with surface
If the airport doesn’t meet VMC conditions, VFR operations shall be
suspended. In that case, controller may ask for intentions.
 Pilot may wait until airport turns to VMC conditions
 Pilot may ask for special VFR or SVFR clearance if the visibility is
above 1500m
 Or Pilot may disconnect
Note: Simulating VMC is allowed only in Exams and Training and only if approved
by Examiner or Trainer

Aerodrome circuits:

Aerodrome circuit altitude: 1100’ Elevation: 52’

Standard Circuit: To avoid flying over restricted airspace(Ref Page13) standard

circuit pattern is designed for following runways

RWY 07, RWY 12 Left Hand Circuit

RWY 25, RWY 30 Right Hand Circuit

Tower Control Zone:

25 NM around MMV VOR

GND/ ’

Page 11
Transition through Control Zone:
VFR Pilot should establish two way communication with tower before
entering tower control zone. On initial contact PIC should give position report
with respect to MMV followed by intentions that to be carried out in control
zone
VFR Departure and Arrivals from VOMM always remain on tower frequency
when flying within Tower Control Zone
Important: The greatest part of tower controller is looking out the window
and visually scanning the runways and airport area through eyes to keep
situation awareness. The standard IVAC “Tower” radar mode may be used
to simulate Uncertified Tower Radar display for quick reference of general
situational awareness. Hence, No Radar Services and No Radar Traffic
Advisories (i.e radar vectors and radar separation is not provided within
Tower Control Zone).

Page 12
PROHIBITED, RESTRICTED, AND DANGER AREAS
PIC of VFR flight is responsible to avoid flying over the
following boundaries. However, for IFR flights ATC is
responsible.
