GENERAL:
Cross Plot Regression Line Errors
Regression Lines are now plotted with the Normalized Standard Error also included.
The Standard Error is calculated in a vertical or horizontal sense depending on the
regression slope being greater than or less than 1 and then divided by the data
range to yield the Normalized Standard Error.

11
GENERAL:
Convolution Process

Convolution is now available as a process for your seismic data. This can be
done on the whole data or specific areas. Uses include convolving a reflectivity
volume with a wavelet to produce a synthetic volume or applying a shaping filter
to a seismic volume to change the waveform characteristics.

in any direction.

15
GENERAL:
Improved Seismic Window Data Menu
In the Seismic Window Data Menu, if you choose Delete, then the data is just
deleted from your current view and the list. In previous versions the data was
immediately deleted from the project. The new menu makes this a safer option.

Now, in order to permanently

delete a volume from the
project, you must do it from
the Data Explorer menu.

16
GENERAL:
Empty Bin Trace Padding

Volumes with trace gaps were

previously always loaded with gaps
being removed from display, as to the
left.

Traces can now be padded so holes

in the data are clear. This is the option
of padding between existing bins.

17
GENERAL:
Empty Bin Trace Padding

The trace padding

option is in Seismic
View Parameters on
the Plot tab.

18
GENERAL:
Improved “Set Current Wavelet”

FRM is extended from its

previous two-phase
capability (brine +
hydrocarbon) to three phase
(brine + oil + gas) systems.

47
AVO:
Output Synthetic Reflectivity
A new option to output the reflectivity series from the AVO synthetic has been
added. Now, with the new convolution process, you should be able to quickly
generate AVO synthetics with different wavelets.

48
AVO:
Incident Angle Color Display
Display the angles on gathers as a color attribute overlay. The interval and
RMS velocities can also be displayed as a color attribute.

49
AVO:
Improved Pick Analysis
The Pick Analysis on gathers has been improved to include information about the
velocities, and the calculated Intercept (A) and Gradient (B) values.

50
AVO:
Depth Processing
The following processing options handle the depth domain seismic:
- AVO Attribute Volume Calculations:

- Super Gather
- Angle Gather
- Incident Angles can be shown as a color attribute overlaying
depth traces

51
AVO:
Synthetic Gathers in Depth
AVO synthetics can
be generated in the
depth domain.

52
AVO:
Synthetic Gathers in Depth
The calculated AVO depth synthetics can be compared to the depth seismic.

In this example, the depth

synthetic gather is displayed
in the Panner window beside
the depth seismic gathers.

53
STRATA:
Angle Gathers
Strata incorporates some new pre-stack data processes which include generating
Angle Gathers. This is in order to support the new Pre-Stack Inversion which
uses angle gathers as the input.

As well, stacking processes are now

available in Strata.

54
STRATA:
Pre-stack Inversion
Pre-stack Inversion of seismic angle gathers to Acoustic Impedance
(Zp), Shear Impedance (Zs) and, optionally, Density is now available.
The Hampson-Russell algorithm makes use of the fact that, in wet
rocks, the Zs and Density are related to Zp. For example, the
Castagna Mudrock Line and the Gardner Equation are relationships
that can be identified from the well logs.
By identifying the wet trend relationships, the general relationship for the Shear
Impedance and Density can be written as a combination of the wet rock trend and the
difference from the wet trend, Δ, caused by hydrocarbons, i.e.,
Z S = kZ P + kC + ΔZ S
ρ = mZ P + mC + Δρ
The inversion algorithm then solves for the ZP, ΔZS and Δρ variables. By imposing the
wet trend relationships, the inversion results are constrained and, by solving for
independent variables, the inversion results are stabilized.
The final inversion results are volumes of ZP, ZS and ρ.
(Note that this is a simplification of the actual algorithm. A more detailed description can be found
55
in the online Pre-stack Inversion Guide or on the Knowledgebase web-site).
STRATA:
Pre-stack Inversion
The well log data
are cross-plotted
and the background
wet trends are
identified.
The trend line
slopes and
intercepts are
identified. These
coefficients are used
in the inversion
algorithm.
Deviations from the
wet trend lines are
possible indicators
of hydrocarbons.

56
STRATA:
Pre-stack Inversion
The plots shown in the
previous slide are used to
determine the regression
coefficients for the main
parameter menu.
A constant Vp/Vs Ratio is
also required.
Pre-whitening values can also
be specified for improved
stability.
Density can be optionally be
solved for (i.e., updated) or
simply calculated from the
background trend.

57
STRATA:
Pre-stack Inversion
Pre-stack Inversion has multiple attribute outputs.

58
STRATA:
Angle-specific Wavelets in Pre-stack
Inversion
In the new Pre-stack Inversion, different wavelets can be used for different angles.
First, extract the wavelets at different angles –
using either Statistical Wavelet extraction or
phase-corrected wavelets extracted using the
wells.
In the Set Current Wavelet menu, you can then
specify which angle the wavelets correspond to.

In the Pre-stack
Inversion menu, the list
of angle-dependent
wavelets will be
displayed.
59
STRATA:
Improved Multi-2D Line Handling
In CE7 the multi-2D line method was limited by having to create a 3D grid to
encompass all of the lines and wells. This usually meant that you had to
increase the grid cell size in order to encompass all of the data. In CE8, this
limitation is removed by using real xy’s.

60
STRATA:
Improved Multi-2D Line Handling

Loading the multiple 2D

lines requires loading them
into a “Grouped Volume”

Viewing different 2D lines in the

project is facilitated by the selection
list at the bottom of the seismic
window.

61
STRATA:
Improved Inversion Analysis
Inversion Analysis can be done quickly in 1D at the well locations, including for pre-
stack inversion. This will help you to decide inversion parameters. Errors are shown
graphically down the wells. For pre-stack inversion, the error can be shown for each
output attribute type, e.g. P-Impedance, S-Impedance, Density.

62
EMERGE:
X and Y’s as Internal Attributes

Use the location information as an internal attribute in EMERGE training.

63
EMERGE:
Single Attribute Identity Transforms
A new option when creating Single
Attribute Lists, is to only Apply the
Identity Transforms to Attributes.
This option ranks the results
according to which attribute has the
best 1-to-1 correlation.
For example, if the target log is P-
impedance and your attributes
include a number of different
seismic inversions, this method will
identify which seismic inversion has
the closest match to the logs.

64
EMERGE:
RBF Clustering
We have added RBF clustering. This is an improvement to the RBF neural
network process. In CE7 the RBFN sets up N equations for N input training
values. This is very time consuming with a large number of training points
due to weights being calculated by inverting an N x N matrix.

Now in CE8 we use RBFN with clustering, which involves computing K

cluster centers from our training data, where K << N. The result is much less
calculations required. You can specify the number of clusters. Using this
technique gives an answer which is still accurate to the full solution but has a
fraction of the computation time.

65
(Feature added in CE7R4)
ISMAP:
EMERGE Analysis Link
Now you can use EMERGE functions to map with both seismic and well data
without leaving ISMap.

66

enable you to selectively alter single
fluid saturations and, in 3-phase
systems, control the saturation ratios.

68
PRO4D:
Heavy Oil Bubble Point Equation
The Fluid Calculator now includes the option for using the Butler Equation (Heavy
Oil Method) for calculating the bubble point of heavy oils as well as the standard
Standing Equation for higher API oil.

69
PRO4D:
Zero-phase Shaping Filter
The Shaping Filter process
used in calibration now
includes a Zero-Phase
Frequency matching option.
The Combined method will first
pass a Full Match shaping filter
to shape the phase spectrum
and then the Zero-Phase option
will be applied after to better
match the amplitude spectra.

70
PRO4D:
Zone-Based Cross Normalization

The Cross-Normalization
calibration process can
now be restricted to zones.

71
PRO4D: Time Variant Time Shift
Thresholds Based on Cross Plot Zones
3D volumes of the cross-correlation coefficients and
time shifts between the monitor and the base survey
are first computed.

The two volumes are then cross-plotted. A V-

shaped polygon zone can be defined on the cross-
plot (that is, there is more confidence in time shift
values with higher cross-correlation values).

This zone can be used to define

the variable time shifts that are
applied to calibrate the two data
sets.
72
PRO4D:
Improved Arbitrary Lines
Arbitrary Lines can be cut from all of the
seismic surveys at the same time.

This includes Arbitrary Lines along the

trajectory of a deviated well.

73
PRO4D:
Auto-Calibration Toolkit
The Auto-Calibration software is designed to convert 4D attribute maps to
estimates of Pressure, Saturation change, contact thickness, etc… Attributes
from the synthetic modeling are fed into the EMERGE prediction engine to find a
relationship between the production parameter and the 4D attribute. The
relationship is applied to the actual 4D anomaly maps to create maps of the
production parameter.
First, synthetic seismic modeling
is done in Pro4D using
Systematic Changes to model
the expected changes in the
seismic waveform with
production. Systematic Changes
creates pseudo-3D volumes of
synthetics.

74
PRO4D:
Auto-Calibration Toolkit

Next, the amplitudes of the synthetic

traces must be normalized with
amplitude of the seismic traces.

Then, the attributes of the 4D

difference traces are extracted…
and data slices of the 4D attributes are
created.

Base Monitor Difference Time delays Normalized amplitude difference

75
PRO4D:
Auto-Calibration Toolkit
The EMERGE engine is then used to
search for a relationship between the
slices of the synthetic 4D seismic
attributes and the modeled reservoir
production parameter.

The relationship is then applied to

the actual 4D anomaly maps to
create maps of the reservoir
production parameter.

76
PRO4D:
Waveform Classification
Using a cross-correlation technique, Auto-Calibration can be
used to classify areas with a similar seismic waveform.

77
PRO4D:

ProMC now supports processing 2D and multiple 2D lines. This also includes
multi-2D velocity models.

82
PROMC:
Velocity Earth Models
ProMC now incorporates Velocity Earth Models based on the Strata approach.

and horizon information.

83
PROMC:
Velocity Earth Models
Building the Velocity Models is done from a new simplified menu.

P- & S-Wave and Density models are built simultaneously.

All models are built in PP Time and can easily be modified.
Models can be quickly deleted or exported.

All models are built using all the PP Horizons. You can control the method by
which the software interpolates between horizons.

84
PROMC:
Domain Conversion Using Models
You can use the velocity models
for Vp and Vs and use them in
Domain Conversion and other
processes inside ProMC such
as simultaneous PP/ PS
inversion.

85
PROMC:
Simultaneous Inversion
ProMC now includes Simultaneous (Pre-stack) Inversion of PP and PS data.

Pre-stack Inversion in ProMC

requires PP and PS volumes and
Vp, Vs and Density Models.

Multiple wavelets for different

angles and for PP and PS
domain are also included.

Simultaneous Inversion is currently limited to only 3D volumes. 86

PROMC:
Simultaneous Inversion
Simultaneous Inversion requires knowledge of the Zp/Zs and Zp/Density
relationships. A log data cross plot is built into the software to facilitate this analysis.
