LESSON PLAN FOR HIGH JUMP 2

Equipment Aims

• 2 x High Jump pits • Develop a curved approach run of 5 to 7 strides.

• Elastic high jump bar • Practice high jumping using the Fosbury flop technique.
• Measuring stick • Record a performance using the Fosbury flop.

ACTIVITY ORGANISATION TIME

WARM UP Jog & stretch 5 min

BACK-OVERS Student practice landing on the upper part of the shoulders with 5 min
the back-over drill. (See High Jump module) Begin facing away
from the bar. The take-off for this drill is from two feet.

CURVE RUNNING Mark out a curved approach run with a 10-metre radius to allow 10 min
students to practice running on a curve. Having completed this
task, mark out a 5-stride approach run up (See High Jump
module – Basic Coaching Techniques and Cues). Practice the
running and taking-off using the scissors technique. Set the bar at
a height so that the entire class can jump and clear the bar
successfully. Repeat as required.

FOSBURY FLOP From the above, the progression to the Fosbury flop using the 10 min
PROGRESSION curved approach run is as follows:
• 5 stride approach, land in the sitting position;
• 5 stride approach, landing on the back;
• 5 stride approach, landing on the upper back

An approach run between 7 to 9 strides is recommended for

most high jumpers performing the Fosbury flop, including
experienced jumpers. Gradually increase the approach run in
blocks of two strides from 5 strides.
EXTENSION Once competence is established with the basic technique, 15 min
ACTIVITY AND students can begin focusing on the following:
• ‘Hold’ or ‘Lean’ away from the bar at the take-off;
PERFORMANCE • ‘Hold’ the arched position over the bar, flick the heels on the
RECORDING descending path to the high jump mat or put the chin to the chest.
Begin to increase height and record performance
COOL DOWN Jog & stretch down 5 min
