Abstract

Kersik Luway Nature Reserve is located in East Kalimantan. It coveres an area of 5000 hectares, including 400
hectares of heathland area. The habitat in this area is very speciᡀ�c, sandy quartz areas with thick peat moss
upperside. Before 1983, many orchid species were found abundantly in this area, but now the population decrease
due to several forest ᡀ�res. During this survey it was recorded 57 orchid species found in two di塀�erent habitats. Ten
species grow at the riverside, which are dominated by Phalaenopsis modesta, Thecostele alata and Corymborkis
veratrifolia. Whereas the other 47 species were found on the heathland, which are dominated by Coelogyne
pandurata, C. foerstermanii, Dendrobium aloifolium, D. crumenatum, D. indivisum, D. leonis and Bromheadia
ᡀ�nlaysoniana. Some epiphytic orchids such as C. pandurata and C. foerstermanii grow more abundantly on the
ground 塀�oor rather than on the host plants. Vaccinium varingiaefolium is the most common host plant in this area
