CO-OP STUDENT

Context
The primary purpose of the Engineering Branch is to provide a safe, forest road network which balances
industrial, commercial and public use in a cost effective manner reflecting the level of use and available
funding while minimizing impacts to the environment. Engineering Branch is comprised of the Victoria

The Victoria Headquarters (HQ) Engineering Group establishes provincial engineering standards and
processes that ensure Forest Service roads are properly designed, built, maintained, deactivated and
administered. It provides quality assurance leadership, staff advice, and professional assistance to the
ministry executive, other Engineering Groups within Engineering Branch, natural resource districts, and
the public.

The co-op position will provide students with the opportunity to gain applied technical experience by
working on challenging projects with increasing levels of responsibility. This position will require field
visits to some selected Forest Service roads and associated structures. Experience will be gained by
working alongside our Professional Engineers and technicians in Victoria, and in other Engineering
Groups or natural resource districts when tasked with field assignments.

Job Overview
This is a projectbased ‘4month long’ auxiliary position where students will be hired to work on a variety of
potential projects in the practice area of ‘forest roads and drainage structures’ within the discipline of
Civil Engineering, which may include:
• Completion of development of Standards for Concrete Bridge Component Repairs.
• Field condition assessment of selected retaining walls to validate the Engineering Branch “Retaining
Wall Inventory and Condition Assessment Program (RWIP) Procedures and Field Guide.
• Field scour assessment of selected bridges and major culverts to validate the Engineering Branch
“Procedure for Ranking the Scour Susceptibility of FSR Bridges and Major Culverts.”
• Project coordination associated with data verification for legislated information sharing and safety
inspections/audits at Forest Service road crossings of railway rights-ofway and tracks.
• Periodic monitoring of in-plant quality control and quality assurance during bridge fabrication, and
suitability review of quality assurance report deliverables prepared by the ministry’s inplant inspection
agency.
• Monitoring construction of selected GRS Arch structures on Forest Service roads for overall
conformance with the ministry standard drawings.
Accountabilities
Duties may include:
• Recording field data, and compiling and interpreting data.
• Making engineering calculations, preparing reports, and drafting & mapping.
• Recommending and making improvements to provincial engineering standards and procedures.
Qualifications

Job Requirements
Education and Experience:
• MUST be registered in a recognized Co-op program at a university undergraduate or graduate level.

• MUST be enrolled as a 4 year undergraduate student, or as a graduate student, in a Civil
Engineering Program.
• Preference will be given to applicants who have successfully completed coursework in structural
analysis, steel and concrete design, hydraulics, soil mechanics and foundation design, and who have
experience in use of various engineering software packages (including Civil 3D).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Excellent written and oral communication skills. Above average organizational skills.
• Strong analytical skills, and sound judgement and decision making skills.
• Strong computer skills, related to word processing and spreadsheet application, preferably in a
Microsoft Windows environment (i.e., experience/proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
• Internet and library research skills.
• Must be able to read maps and plot information. Ability to enter data quickly and meticulously;
manipulate data and create professional quality documents for distribution.
• Ability to prepare graphs, tables and make engineering calculations.
• Capable of working under limited supervision. Ability to demonstrate initiative in the performance of
duties.
• Valid BC driver’s license.
