1. Self-Assessment
After taking the assessment, How Healthy Are You?, from the textbook I’ve found that
there are areas of health that I am sufficient in as well as insufficient. Of the seven different
categories within the assessment, I am doing well within social, emotional, spiritual, and
personal health. My areas of work are physical, environmental, and intellectual health. I consider
myself moderately healthy, however there are things and/or changes that can help me further
improve my life.
The health assessment test proved that the areas of health that I need to work on are that
of physical, environmental, and intellectual health. Physical health is one of the areas I lack,
physical health contributes to a person’s overall well-being. My physical health has declined
with getting caught up in life. Environmental health is another area where I need to work on.
This subject helps me care for the world I live in, if everyone were to be environmentally
healthy, it would be of great positive impact for the Earth we live on. Intellectual health is the
last area of my health that requires improvement. My intellectual health however, I believe can
be improved over time as I continue to try and strive within my education. There are many
changes that can make a big impact on my health whether it be negative or positive. Some are
small changes, while others may be larger. For example, a small change such as washing larger
loads of laundry, turning off the water while I scrub my face, getting out of the shower as soon as
I finish can greatly improve my environmental health. To improve my physical health, I can get
myself on a set schedule. It may be difficult to figure it out at first but through trial and error, I
can find something that will work out for me. It’ll consist of enough sleep, physical activity, as
There are many things that are important in sustaining a healthy lifestyle other than just
to be deemed “healthy” by others. A healthy lifestyle is important to the longevity of one’s life.
“Healthy” doesn’t always refer to someone’s physical health. To be truly “healthy,” a person
needs to think of not only themselves but the area that surrounds them. It is important for a
person to be healthy because if everyone does their own part, a little does go a long way. Earth as
we know it so far is the only place sustainable for life. If everyone’s environmentally healthy,
Earth can last us longer than we expect it to, however we are draining it of its natural resources
and demolishing it’s natural beauty that helps other organisms live. It is important to also
sustaining a healthy lifestyle because it makes a person become less stressed. It makes a person
overall feel better than a person who is deemed unhealthy. Being healthy starts from yourself, it
puts you in a position where life is more enjoyable. The importance of sustaining a healthy
lifestyle is great because it allows for a person to thrive within their environment and use life’s
There are many things that I can do to achieve a healthier lifestyle. To start, I can
improve what is obvious to me the most – physical health. One goal I have to improve my
physical health is becoming more active. I start my day by waking up at 5:45AM, shower and
head to school for my class that starts at 7AM. After this class ends, I have a gap from 10AM
through 1PM. During this time I usually read over the text book and lounge around. Instead of
lounging around, I can use some of that time to become more active such as taking my dogs for a
walk around my neighborhood or the park. Doing so at least twice a week will allow me to active
Another goal that isn’t as obvious as being physically healthy is being more
observing what is around me and what I do that negatively effects my surroundings. One goal to
improving my environmental health can consist of me watching my water usage, this applies to
when I brush my teeth, wash my face, shower, as well as using full loads of laundry. There is a
drought in the state that we reside in, California, and if I do my part to reduce my unnecessary
water usage it can help bring us closer to being out of the drought.
One last goal I have to improve my overall health is to be more clean or germ-free. This
goal brings me to become more healthy but also have others around me healthy with a strong
immune system as well. To do so, it consists of me washing my hands more often before I eat or
touch sensitive openings of my body such as cuts, wounds, mouth, or eyes area and more. Not
only can washing hands be affective but also using hand sanitizer as well when a sink and soap
aren’t available. Being more germ free can be really useful during the times where the flu is most
prominent. It can benefit me by not getting the flu as well as not spreading germs to others
around me.
5. Overall Conclusion
Overall, I believe to consider myself as semi-healthy. There are areas where I excel at
and areas that I can improve in too. My social, emotional, spiritual, as well as personal health are
some categories of health that I should work to maintain. Some areas of improvement are
physical, environmental, and intellectual. I have three goals in mind to help me improve my
overall health. In doing so, I would then slowly be deemed more environmental as well as
physically healthy. My last area of health that needs to be worked on is intellectual health.
Intellectual health, to me, can be improved with time as well as experience. Experiencing and
learning from new things or ideas can greatly improve my intellectual health. With more
intellectual health, I am able to use that to help others around me such as educating them on
things that they may be going through or may be unsure of. If I continue and really try to follow
through with my goals, I will feel better, being a happier and healthier individual.
