D. Discussing new concept and practicing new
skills #1:

What are the cultural background and orogin of


the Ati-atihan Festival? - Ati- atihan festival is feast held annually in January
in honor to the Santo Nino(Infant Jesus),
concluding on the third Sunday, in the island and
town of Kalibo Aklan.
-The name Ati-atihan means “ to be like aetas” or
“make believe Ati’s”. Aetas were the primary
settlers in the island.
- the festival consists of tribal dance, music
accompanied by indigenous costumes and
weapons, and parade along the street.

Cultural background and origin of Sublian Festival. - Sublian festival was started by the city Mayor
Eduardo Dimacuha on July 23, 1988.
-A subli is presented during a feast, as a ceremonial
worship dance in honor the Holy Cross.
-The subli is made up of lengthy prayers, songs and
dances in predetermined arrangement.

Cultural background and origin of Sinulog Festival. -Sinulog Festival in Cebu city in held every year on
the third Sunday of January. Sinulog dance, is now
tarditonal and ritual dance in honor of Santo Nino.
The dance is accompanied by the sound of the
drums.
-1980 was the first year that the parade was
organized.
-the Sinulog was already danced by the locals in
honor of their wooden statue in the period before
the Cebuanos were baptized.

Cultural background and origin of Ibalong Festival. - Ibalong Festival is non-religious festival in Legaspi
City, Albay, Philippines held in August. The festival
celebrates the epic story Ibalong who was
accompanied by three legendary heroes, namely
Baltog, Handyong, Bantong and other ancient
heroes.
-people parade wearing mask and costume to
imitate the appearances of the heroes and the
villians.
-The Ibalong festivals aims to express warmth and
goodwill to all the people.
Cultural background and origin of Masscara -Masskara Festival the festival first began in 1980
Festival. during the period of crisis.
-this was the first Masskara Festival and a time of
tragedy on April 22 of the year.
-In the midst tragic events, the city’s artists, local
government and civic group decided to hold a
festival of smile, because the city at that time
known as the City of Smile.

What was your observation on the video? -The video is all about the Kadayawan festival.

Tell something about the festival -Kadayawan Festival was held in Davao City. In
1986 was commenced by the government program
called “Unlad Proyekto Davao” to unite Davaoenos
after martial law. And to showcase the peaceful
and colorful city of Davao.
-In 1988 name was change the name of the
celebration from “Apo Duwaling” to Kadayawan sa
Davao” from the word Madayaw which means
important, paramount, beautifu and kind, and a
thanks giving festival to celebrate the bountiful
harvest of flower, fruits and culture.
