2 Preparation of 1 N HCl
Prepare to
standard a. Chemical reagents
Chemical  Hydrochloric Acid (special grade) 37 %
 Sodium Carbonate Anhydrous (Na2CO3)
 Bromolphenol Blue (C19 H10 Br4 O5 S)

b. Devices
 Measuring Cylinder 1000 ml, 100 ml, 50ml

 Measure 90ml of HCl and put in the
volumetric and dilute with water until final
standard level 1000ml.

STANDARDIZATION
 Weigh 1gm of anhydrous sodium
carbonate
 Put in the Erlenmeyer flask and
dissolved it with 50ml demineralised
water.
 1-2 drops of bromophenol blue
indicator ( BPB )
 Titrate with 1NHCl until color change
from blue to yellow (end point)

Calculation

3 a. Filter the electrolyte through dry filter

Procedure paper, using filter funnel and
polyethylene beaker.
b. Pipette 100ml of the filtered electrolyte in
the 250ml volumetric flask and add to it
about 150ml of aqueous ammonia ( 1 :
9 ) to the standard level.
c. After plunging, shake well until the
solution becomes thoroughly milky, filter
the solution through dry filter paper.
(Advisable to shake slowly while topping
up )
d. Pipette 25ml of the filtered solution.( Be
sure that the solution is very clear before
taking the sample. To confirm these,
discard the first and second filtered
collected). Use only the clear solution in
the Erlenmeyer flask.
e. Add in about 2 drops of Methyl Red
indicator and neutralized the above
solution with 1N HCl standard solution
until the color change from yellow to
pink.
f. Add in the above solution 40ml of Ethyl
Alcohol, about 8 gm of potassium
chloride and 3 – 4 drops of methyl red
indicator.
g. Mix them well. Have the potassium
chloride slightly dissolve and also have
the boron and fluorine reacted well.
h. Titrate the above solution with 1N HCl
standard solution until bright crimson
color remains permanently.

Calculation :
F-(g/l) = 1N HCl qty (ml) - blank tit (ml)x F x 29.4
Sample quantity (ml ) 25
